Cadets of the Wisdom of the Dragon School, here you shall find the keys to your enemies strengths and weaknesses. May the Davion swine be crushed under the heels of our triumphant Battlemechs.

The production capabilities of the Federated Suns are as follows:

Norse Battlemech Works: Marduk
GRF-1N Griffin
WVR-6R Wolverine

Corean Enterprises: New Avalon, Jeratha
VLK-QA Valkyrie

Achernar Battlemechs: New Avalon, Ith
WSP-1A Wasp
PHX-1 Phoenix Hawk
LCT-1V Locust

Kallon Weapon Industries: Talon
RFL-3N Rifleman
GRF-1N Griffin
ENF-4R Enforcer
JM6-S Jagermech

Independence Weaponry: Quentin
AS7-D Atlas-x5 per annum
JM6-S Jagermech
VTR-9B Victor-x20 per annum
MAD-3R Marauder-x20 per annum

Jalastar Aerospace: Amristar, Panpour
CN9-A Centurion

The Federated Suns has a very well rounded complement of 'mechs in production, as well as large numbers of other 'mech designs no longer in production, such as the Javelin. The facility on Quentin turns out 45 main-line heavy and assault 'mechs each year, as well as an undetermined number of support Jagermechs. The Federated Suns' main military rivals, the Draconis Combine and Capellan Confederation, have to make do with significantly lighter compliments, although both houses controlled Quentin at points in the past, and so still possess heavy battlemechs from the lines there.
The Enforcer and Centurion are also useful as barrage vehicles, and is best used in conjunction with heavy and assault 'mechs, as it is unable to keep up with most other medium 'mechs.

The Federated Suns also has access to a well-rounded compliment of light and medium battlemechs, which can be used for launching raids onto enemy territory or for screening heavier forces. They do not, however, have access to LAM construction facilities, and so they cannot rely as heavily on LAM support as the DCMS does.

Draconis and Capellan forces can deal with Federated Suns raiders on an equal level; the Dragon and Vindicator as matches for anything the Federated Suns has at the light and medium weight level. Dealing with an invasion of heavy and assault 'mechs is considerably more difficult. For this sort of situation, guerrilla warfare is the only recourse.

I would attack the factories at Talcott, Salem, New Avalon, Layover, Johnsondale, Belladonna, Talon, Kathil, and Axton. These are the locations of factories producing powerplants for the AFFS. Destroy these facilities and you cripple the enemy.

Are you sure, that DCMS has enough troops to crush all these targets without crippling, or exposing itself in the process? More subtle methods suggested (DEST?)

Yeah, I'm thinking that th DCMS would be rather hard pressed to hit New Avalon, Belladonna, Kathil, Talon and Axton. All of which are in the Crucis or Capellan Marches, and quite a distance from Combine space. To actually get your DEST teams on to such heavily defended planets, they'd have to go with an assault force, or as civilians. Since every world has its own customs people who go through your stuff, it would be hard to bring your explosives with you. And it would be hard to find a preexisting supplier of explosives on these worlds - one who'd be willing to sell to Dracs, although I suppose theft is an option.

Actually, it's my understanding that Belladonna and Talon have never been attacked at all, by anyone.

DEST could probably pull off a clandestine drop on New Avalon.

Perhaps, but how? There's a lot of ships coming and going in New Avalon space. Yes, you can hide amongst them, but sooner or later you need to head for the planet without being scrutinized. Which tips your hand immediately.

Don't forget that New Avalon is the heart of the Federated Suns. (Yes, I know about the Death Commando raid. Can someone tell me the specifics of that, though?) Even in 3025, everything on and around New Avalon is likely to be the best 26th/27th century technology had to offer. Likely an array of spy sats, just in case someone tries to land there without permission, to see where they land. Getting onto the ground is one thing. Attaining your objective before getting killed (death of the DEST team is a given) is another matter.

I'd expect the other capital worlds, as well as a few special ones like Hesperus, to be similarly difficult to crack without a BattleMech regiment or four.

In truth, special ops and equipment to support them are one of the many aspects ignored untill recently, like artillery and warships. I have seen a handfull of smallcraft insertion ships on this board which could be used to insert specops onto hostile planets. My version allowed a team of 6 BA equiped soldiers to insert via a drop pod. [escape pod]

I cannot see why something similar could not be used in lvl 1 or 2 play. Personely, i don't think a Capital world is that much harder to get onto for a small team then any other world. That is alot of space to monitor. Personely, i think the difficulty is for the team to get to the target successfully.

The raid was actually perpetrated by the ComGuards, dressed up to look like Liao forces. Their intention was to destroy the Grey Death Memory Core at the NAIS, in an attempt to retain Comstar's technological edge over the rest of the Inner Sphere.

That's why intelligence organizations prefer to rely on deep cover agents.

Why sneak in over the razor wire when you can walk right in the front door?

Oh? I never knew that. I've only seen references to "Liao Death Commando raid." What kind of forces were involved in this? And from where did you learn of it?

Quote:

FASA wrote in the Comstar Sourcebook:

Precentor Dieron, Myndo Waterly, was determined to ascend to the Primacy of Comstar. Three weeks prior to her explosive call for Tiepolo's expulsion, she (along with the Precentor ROM) ordered a battalion-size strike force assembled. As in the Sarna framing {something covered earlier in the book}, the ComStar Guards and Militia forces were repainted and reconfigured. This time they were made to resemble the elite forces of the House Liao Death Commandos in order to throw any MIIO agents attempting to trace their origins off the scent.

All troops for the mission volunteered. They knew that the mission was a one-way attack and that under no circumstances must they be taken prisoner. The Precentor ROM provided all the ComStar Mechwarriors with a quick-acting poison to use if they were captured by the opposing forces. Their mission was clearly defined: it was either death or success. No middle ground was acceptable. The fanatics who volunteered were more than willing to fight under such terms.

{The next paragraph is apparently a bunch on Wobbie gobbledy-gook put into the book for flavoring. I'll spare you from reading it.}

The interdiction of the Federated Suns slowed the Davion War machine, but failed to stop it. With Tikonov completely under the thumb of the Federated Suns, House Liao was nearly crushed. Meanwhile, in mid-August 3029, Precentor Waterly dropped a bombshell on the First Circuit. She had received evidence that a copy of the Star League memory core recovered by the Gray Death Legion had found its way to the NAIS. With the precious information in the hands of the great minds gathered there, ComStar faced an uparalleled threat - the loss of its technological superiority.

Precentor Waterly pressed for an attack against the NAIS to destroy or capture the core. She also used the incident to call for the First Circuit to expel Primus Tiepolo. In the middle of the expulsion debate, the Primus suffered a heart attack and was rushed to the Hilton Head medical center. The First Circuit agreed to Waterly's proposed attack on the NAIS, as long as ComStar could not be blamed for the incident. Two days later Primus Tiepolo suffered a massive stroke and was kept alive only on life support systems in the hospital.

{More Wobbie babbling.}

Having readied her troops weeks earlier, Precentor Waterly was able to strike quickly against the NAIS. On September 10, 3029, the ComStar "Death Commandos" attacked New Avalon Institute of Science. Dropping onto the campus proper they expected only light resistance but were shocked that Team Banzai managed to rally a stern defense. Even Prince Davion himself waded into the fray in his BattleMaster. NAIS Security responded, too, and the battle lasted more than two full hours. When it was over, the ComStar force had been destroyed to the last BattleMech. The memory core remained intact and in the hands of the Federated Suns scientists. The Clandestine mission ended in dismal failure, but the First Circuit did not blame Precentor Myndo Waterly. Because Primus Tiepolo had failed for so long to make any kind of move against the Federated Commonwealth, Waterly's failure with a bold move could be excused. No one on the First Circuit doubted her personal power or devotion to the word of Blake, and Waterly's star was on the rise.

That is exactly what I mean. This seems to be a suicide run.

Death for the glory of the Dragon. It's typically Kuritan mindset. They'd do it.
