What do you guys think of hatchets on fast lights? Like the Scarabus. I've seen a non-canon design do this as well. (It was called the Aurora, found it in MegaMek; 7/11/7 35t)

And is it any different for mediums, like the Nightsky?

And any recommendations for testing opponents for a Scarbus or Nightsky?

Hatchets are generally useless. They take space and weight that could be used for real weapons and equipment. They also draw extra fire from people that fear them. Great fun for show mechs but little use for real Battle Mechs.

Need it be any more clear than that?

Use the space for more weapons and/or armor and kick instead.

I love them. Everyone else that has responded thus far has gone neg on it. Well, I'll just laugh when my hatchet wielding light takes your head off in one TSM assisted bash. I've done that like 5 or 6 times now. Twice in one game too. I'm not saying a LOT of light mechs should be this way, but 1 to a company, or every other company isn't going to hurt either. Especially if its placed in a lance with weapon packed lights like the Jenner. They can work together as a team and ambush bigger mechs. And thats exactly what I do with them.

Hitting someone in the head with a hatchet isn't the norm.

If you have many light mechs vs bigger mechs you surround one of the bigger mechs and kick it.

Hatchets have a high pucker factor for inexperienced players. Experienced players don't care if you have one.

I like the Scarabus. I've used it to drop a RFL-3N Rifleman. Only got to use the hatchet twice and I missed once but it still dropped. lol

What's so exceptional in dropping a Rifleman? Anyone can do that.

One reason people drool over hatchets is they think hits are rolled on the punch table. Unfortunately they're not.

IMO kicking is the best physical attack for damaging enemies. Once they lose a leg you can take them out at your leisure.

If you want to be nasty you can try pushing people off the board or down a Level 2+ hill.

Hatchets tend to be very tricky to use. They are possibly the most specializewd piece of equipment out there, and must be treated as such.
The close confines of urban or canyon warfare will see the close-combat rich environment that favor the axe-wielder. Just beware of rushing other mechs built for the same sort of combat. Chances are, they also have a hatchet, or, even worse, a 20-class autocannon.
Personally, I will take axe mechs in one-on-one duels, where they often accel. Blatant use of terrain is their best bet. Although I have not used one lighter than the Ti T'sang, and have no personal experience withmedium and lightweights, I have seen the Nightsky do exceedingly well, at least before it got gang beat.

Is that what I scraped off my foot last week?

On the hatchet in general, I've been a big fan of the Axeman and the Hatchetman in certain situations for years. They suck at open combat where a good player can stay out of their (limited) range and pick them apart, but in cities, mountains, forests, and canyons, they can excel at mugging.

I've gotten some good use out of them as raiders.
