Well, as you may be able to tell, I'm now in AT2 fever. I am still digesting the rules, and absolutely love the TRO in the back of that volume.

One thing that I fell in love with, was the Riever 100B. Granted, as a fighter, it is horribly inefficient. Undergunned, underarmoured and very much oversinked. However, the basic weapons loadout, while not the be-all-end-all, has soooo much style: 1 AC20, 2 AC5, 1 LRM10. Now, I love ACs. "Dakka-dakka" is so much cooler than "zap" or (semi-)guided missiles of minute size but huge volleys - a problematic concept at best.....

I realised that this could be transferred onto the Atlas chassis. Seeing as there are a few stories (well, at least in Battletechnology) where FWL forces also field an Atlas, it would be doable: basically an Atlas that retains the AC20 as is, downgrades the LRM20 to an LRM10 and throws out all the little weapons for two arm-mounted AC5s.

Fluff, I'm thinking: less Atlases than in Steiner, Davion or even Kuritan space, right? So, inspired by their very own support fighter, a refit that befits a commander, with a predominance towards long-range weaponry which doesn't cause much heat. The commander can stick out of the thick of the fight and just fire for what it's worth - heat is not going to be a problem.

Yes, I know the design is flawed. "Only" an AC20 for close range. Only ammo weapons (though with plenty of ammo for a single engagement). But it would be very much in character with both the Atlas (basic appearance would not change one single bit!) and the Marik/Riever side of things.

Now, is this worth going into? Is it worth for me to draw up the fluff? I know - it is yet another 100 tonner. But they really do have the most character.

In the same spirit, I also did a refit for the Javelin (Davion-Sparrowhawk), Crusader (Kurita-Shilone), Marauder (Liao-Transgressor) and Cyclops (Steiner-Chippewa). But compared to the above Marik Atlas, they were just much more boring, yet at the same time, much less in character with the parent design!

Besides, would it make sense that, all of a sudden, ALL the successor states modelled their 'mechs after the fashion of their aerospace fighters?

edit: see below post (decided to make it another post, in order for it to not detract from the above)

I am going to vote "yes" on this thing - A) because I've become instantly fond of this thing (especially since MegaMek just showed me once again how frustrating the lvl1 Atlas is); B) so I can see the results of this poll instantly

I actually thought of another defense of the multitude of assault designs: many light and medium 'mechs will have been manufactured in their thousands. The fluff supports this. But I have yet to see an assault that is described as being a product of mass production (with the exception of the Zeus? And Stalker? Vampire and I had a very interesting discussion about the proliferation of those two designs). Also, a huge and valuable design is more likely to receive special individual care and modification, hence a multitude of (semi-)unique designs!

That design is basically what my Atlas-OAF is.
Only mine is in the 3055 universe. So I took a standard Atlas ans added Endo, then downgraded the LRM to a 15, removed the 2 lasers in the arms and replaced them with UAC 5s and kept the AC20 and med lasers in the back.

So it trades the close range power of the lasers for the long range sniping of the ac5s.

I like your mix for the 3025 era.

Certainly so.. It's an interesting design...
I still favour smaller mechs but innovation is nice too..

Well, seeing as the resonance was very positive, I just submitted this design.

However, who knows when this'll appear. I am currently waiting on these designs, all of which I submitted in the last week:

BlackJack IIC - correction
Kronos
Kronos variant
Minihammer (lvl1 medium - yay Erenon!)
Minimax (see above, yay!)
And now, this AS-7M

Are any of you guys waiting too? Just wanting to make sure that mine weren't rejected or something....

I'm waiting for several of mine, as well.
