I was just back-reading the Design Submissions forum, and I ran across several references to "detachable hand-held weapons". What are these?

Well they were suppoes to be interesting and neat but in reality they really arent. Units like the Stinger, Wolverine, Battlemaster, and a few others that have a weapon held in its hand can be considered hand held weapons. Unfortunately the rules for these were not very good. The HH weapon's crits were counted in the regular arm crits (so they were like being built into the arm) The weapon itself couldnt exceed the lifting ability of the unit (so the Stinger could only mount a 2 ton weapon, Battlemaster 8.5 and so on) And needed to be armored and completely cooled. So the Stinger could mount a 2 ton weapon. 1 ton med laser and then that leaves you 1 ton for the armor and heatsinks, Yup you guessed it, it dosent work. Oh if you were going to mount say a missle launcher you needed to have ammo for it as well. So the HH weapons never really caught on since they didnt really add a benefit. Yeah I know it says you can detatch the weapon but I think the fluff says they can do that already so /shrug.

Now I dont know if these rules have changed. It has been a while since I read the rules as well. It was one of thoes rules that I though could have been a lot of fun but turned out to be pretty lame. But that is my opinion.

Its been a while since I read the HH Weapon Construction Rules myself, but that sounds about right. They basically need to be completely independent of othe mech, with the exception of power if required. THey need to have there own armor, ammo and heatsinks.

LONG STORY SHORT: THEY ARE SO NOT WORTH IT! They look/sound cool, but AREN'T

IMO They kinda detract from the overall feel of Battletech. Yes some of the Cannon Mechs or Unseenmechs had fluff that mentioned they were detachable. But it seems like this was an idea to incorporate Gundam and the like into BTech. if I remember correctly these rules came out shortly after Gundam caught on here in the US.

I kinda like the idea of my 'mech carrying a 'mech-sized rifle...

Then running down the street, and blasting the head off an enemy Mobile S...I mean, 'mech.

Yeah. We ignored those rules entirely.

If the Stinger really wanted to drop the medium laser, we'd let him, HH or not.

Same with the Battlemaster's PPC.

I kinda got around that limit, kinda...

I would build my designs with tonnage left over, so i could use it in the HH weapon. Not sure if it was legal or illegal. It worked thou. So if I was doing a Stinger clone, i would leave 2 or 3 tons unused [unsure if DHS could be used or not.] It kinda worked but was not very efficent. However, it does allow a semi-modual mech without using Omni tech.

Personely, i thought the limit of 10% was silly. I up'd it to 20% myself. I figured that because this item was constructed specificly to be held by a mech that mechs could carry more. in addition, the weapon was held in both hands. it allowed for abit more flexability and usefullness.

Stinger could now carry 4 tons; 1t ML, 3t HS, and 1t Armor [provided by the 1t previously used in the RA ML which removed for this concept.]

However, all of this still had one hug backdraw that was not mentioned. HH weapons are still counted as cargo, which means your mech is slowed down abit. If i recall, the Stinger above would now be a 5/8/6.
