The mech already mounts 95% armor, but going to a standard Gauss could help in other ways. Here's the new Karagin-inspired variant.

==Overview:==
Some members of the Lyran High Command had long been worried about the lack of
fast scout mechs. The problem had only become worse with the Clan invasion and
the new technology available in the Inner Sphere. Voting for three new assault
mechs netted enough votes in exchange to design a new scout mech. The new
design, codenamed "Sprinter", was to have a top speed of at least 130 km/h and
the armor to survive encounters with light mechs. Somewhere along the way it
got caught in committee and mutated a bit.

==Capabilities:==
The original design was based on the Phoenix Hawk, only with increased speed
and jump capacity. The prototype looks nothing like that. It carries the three
ER Medium Lasers and two Small Lasers it was supposed to, but the speed has
been much reduced. Otherwise it couldn't carry the massive Hammerfist Heavy
Gauss for dealing with Clan scout mechs. The now seriously misnamed Sprinter
moves at a top speed of 82 km/h and is able to jump 120 meters.

==Battle History:==
The test lance deployed on a classified border world in early 3062 had a brief
encounter with raiders or something. A company of older mediums and lights
attacked, perhaps hoping for spare parts. Seven attackers were destroyed
within the first 40 seconds of the encounter. The rest fled as quickly as
possible, except for a poor Whitworth. Even faced with total annihilation the
pilot didn't surrender, instead choosing to Stackpole his machine. It was
later found that all downed pilots had committed suicide rather than being
captured. A destroyed mech recovery vehicle was found only one km away.

==Variants:==
The -2R variant has been proposed by observers less obsessed with having the
single heaviest weapon on every mech. It would mount a standard Gauss Rifle
instead of the unweildy HGR and exchange the ER Medium Lasers for standard
models. The number of MLs could also be doubled, the jump capacity increased
to max and CASE added to the armor. This would seem to be a superior variant,
but it does lack the Heavy Gauss...

I like the Medium laser boat with a long range punch. Snipe them when they are far away, then punish them with all those lasers if the try to close. I also like the speed. 5-8-5 is a good speed for this weight/power.
