==Overview:==
The Remora class utility DropShip was desinged by Federated-Boeing as a
companion to the Deimos class frigate. The Remora is intended to enhance the
Deimos' capabilites across the board, allowing the Deimos to bring more
firepower to bear in combat. The Remora's large cargo bay also supplements the
Deimos' smaller bay, allowing both to better support their aerospace
fighters.

It quickly became obvious that the Remora could be used on ships other than
the Deimos. The Fox and Avalon class ships of the AFFS benefit especially from
the Remora, as they both have weak fighter components. And the large number of
docking rings carried by Foxes and Avalons mean that those ships can carry
several Remoras to meet their needs.

The Remora was originally intended to be a 35,000 ton aerodyne DropShip. But
it quickly became obvious that something so light couldn't fulfill its
intended role. In the end, the newly spheroid DropShip eneded up being nearly
three times its original tonnage.

The Remora's weapons are almost exclusively energy based - this removes the
need for carrying ammunition, allowing the Remora to more fully dedicate
itself to serving its WarShip. The exception to this is the DropShip's capital
armament; as DropShips cannot carry capital energy weapons, capital missile
launchers were used. These capital grade weapons - a total of ten Kraken-T
missile launchers - allow the Remora to assist its WarShip in subduing enemy
WarShips. The DropShip's conventional weapons are retained for defending both
WarShip and DropShip from enemy fighters and DropShips. The Remora carries a
full wing or aerospace fighters, which are used for offfensive or defensive
purposes as the situation dictates. The large number of fighters aboard the
Remora is especially useful for Avalon and Fox class ships, which have light
integral fighter compnents.

The Remora's armor is extremely heavy when comapred to that of most DropShips.
Even some light WarShips mount less armor than the Remora. This level of armor
allows the Remora to stay in the fight for longer periods than most assault
DropShips. Very few WarShips in the Inner Sphere can dispatch a Remora with a
single volley, as they can with most other DropShips, and a Remora's captial
weapons mean that it can't truly be ignored. The inevitable result of this is
that part of a Remora's role is to draw fire away from its parent WarShip,
giving the larger vessel a greater chance of survival - and victory.

In addition to its weapons, the Remora carries a full company of
battle-armored Marines. But where a WarShip's Marines primarily are present
for defending the ship from capture, a Remora's Marines are intended for the
assault role. The eight small craft bays stuffed into the Remora's hull are
meant to carry boarding craft, allowing the Marines to board their target
quickly.

The Remora's final asset is the one least expected of a DropShip this heavy:
high speed. Capable of accelerations of up to 4.5 Gs, the huge Remora can keep
up with most DropShips in use today, reardless of their size. The ability to
outrun many troop carrying DropShip classes is especially useful, allowing the
Remora to catch and destroy invading DropShips before they land troops, or to
move ahead of an invasion group and destroy enemy DropShips defending the
target world. This speed is a legacy of the ship's orginal purpose: it was
deemed necessary that the Remora be able to keep up with the Deimos frigates
it was meant to protect. It was later decided that the Remora should be able
to outrun the Deimos, to help keep the expensive DropShip from being left
behind in case of retreat.

==Deployment==
At present, one Remora is planned for each Deimos contructed. When
Federated-Being has more construction space available, more will be built and
assigned to Avalons and Foxes.
