Well, I was really waiting for an American to post something.....
Heard about Hunter S. Thompson taking his own life on the 20th. Strangely appropriate, methinks. Reactions: shock, followed by great amusement, followed by - "How the f**k did this not happen 30 years ago?!?"
I'm not American, I've never really read his works. Yet I still think he influenced all of our western society quite a bit.
Any other reactions?

Hmm.. i cna't say i knew much about him. About all i know is that he inspired Warren Ellis to write Transmetropolitan and base the main character Spider Jerusalem around him..
that's about it i guess...

All I know of the man is that half the country is lining up to dance on his grave. The other half is divided between those who wonder what took so long and those who think its a terrible loss we'll never recover from.
My reaction:
Hunter who?

Clearly I am too. My first thought upon reading the name was, "Hunter Ellis died?" Then I re-read the name, and realised that I didn't have a clue who Hunter S. Thompson was.

I had to search for that name. He was just another Vienam Era Journalist, who made the mainstream with fear and loathing in vegas. liked the movie, hated the druggie outlook.
