I'd like to know how many mechs should we each use and weight class for a good first battle. Assume 2 players.

Go for two 'mechs on each side. Medium-weights are best, because they have the widest variety of ability. Lights are hard to use because they rely so terribly much on maneuver and speed. Heavies don't quite have the flexability of Mediums, and Assaults...well, Assaults are something you don't want to cut your teeth on. If you get used to Assaults, then it can be hard to switch to lighter machines.

Pah.. Light mechs are the way to go. One light mech each...preferably locusts 
That's how i cut my teeth.
ALternatively.. if you're clanners.. one Kit Fox (uller) each.
Scale up as you get used to it..

C'mon, don't try to start him out with level 2 stuff. Let him get the basics first, THEN start playing with the more complex stuff.

One on one with heavies sounds quite right to me.
Multi-choice polls would be nice too.

Here would be my 'mech choices:
2-on-2 Medium Battle - Hermes II and Wolverine versus Griffin and Clint.
1-on-1 Heavy Battle - Thunderbot versus Thunderbolt.

First battle:
LCT-1V Locust vs LCT-1V Locust
Get basic rules right
Second Battle:
MLN-1A Merlin vs MLN-1A Merlin
Learn more about other weapons (including those with minimum ranges), Jump Jets and actually considering heat issues.

I agree, one-on-one with heavies to start. They are somewhat mobile and you can get a taste of giving damage and recieving damage without getting toasted on the first couple salvoes. Also it allows the to hit targets to be lower thus allowing more hits to occur so as to promote a feeling of accomplishing something. If it's too hard to hit your opponent then you may get frustrated.

Two mediums per player. Good moving, varied weapons, can help each other.
