Two classics step into the ring; only one will step out alive. Which will it be? Conditions are rolling hills and moderate hills.

Warhammer.

They go the same speed and both have heat problems. But I feel the variety of weapons the Warhammer carries will win this fight. Yes, the Marauder has more long range fire power. But not that much more, and with the speeds these two go it is almost a moot point for the AC/5 to be much of a factor without other units in the match. The Marauder has 1.5 tons more armor. But they both have the same amounnt in their side torsos. On the Warhammer that seems to be pretty well balanced with the rest of his armor schematic, On the Marauder it looks silly. The Marauder has beefy CT and arms but the legs and side torsos are underarmored IMO. The same can be said of the Warhammer. The difference is in the PPC-heatsink ratio. Marauder has 2 PPC's and only 16 HS's. The Warhammer has 2 PPC's and 18 HS's. This difference will be the key factor. Also, the Marauder has the aforementioned AC/5 as well as 2 medium lasers. This seems pretty decent. But compared to the Warhammer's SRM-6, 2 medium lasers, 2 small lasers, and 2 MG's it seems deficient. Also, the Warhammer has those 2 extra HS's to help get rid of the heat generated by it's back up arsenal. The Marauder does as well but it's backups are less than half the Warhammer's are if with greater range.
If the Marauder can stay out in the 3-6 hex range from the Warhammer it has a better chance than at any other range. Too far away or too close and the balance shifts grossly to the Warhammer.

If the Warhammer can close before taking critical hits to the legs it has a good chance of victory. The short-range weaponry is quite impressive compared to the Marauder's. The MAD is a bit tougher and carries only one slot of explosive ammo, but it's in a badly armored location without any other crits.

Or just stand off at range and put those extra two heat sinks to use. The 'Hammer can fire both PPCs in a round for a bit longer than the MAD. It might be enough to blast through and kill the opponent. Entering Depth 1 water could tip the balance even more, but you have to do that while your legs are still armored. The WHM has to decide quickly.

None of the two can afford to make mistakes here.

edit: But I think the Warhammer can win most of the time.

if you keep them at a long range i would say the marauder. once to get in short range than the warhammer would get the upper hand. hes got 2 small lasers and mg to use if you dont want to risk fireting ppc at minimum rang.

I voted the Marauder. Because I like it a lot more in standard games with at least a lance a side.

Considering the huge fire-power of the Warhammer, it would need more heat sinks or armour. And no, I'm not talking the Davion variant here, that one looses too much of its guns.

The Marauder is a GREAT fire-support 'mech. As such, it would have a difficult time against a one-on-one with a Warhammer.

So, in a duel, it may be close (the Marauder still has 25% more long-range fire-power and more armour), but if it was just about choosing one 'mech to go with generally, it would be the Marauder for me every time!

P.S. As mud has said, these are great classics. I like both of them, neither of them stinks like, for instance, the Crusader, in itself a classic, but, unfortunately, not much good.

P.P.S. A lot of commas in that last sentence, I know, I know....

O.K., I've just got to reply to that cheap shot at my beloved Crusader. In a lance a Crusader is an extremely versatile 'mech, able to account well for itself at any range, and carrying good armor. It'll definitely trash a Catapult, it's closest competitor, any day of the week.

I voted for the Marauder. It has to keep the Warhammer at range, and go through the hammers torso armor, which is pretty light. The Marauder has heat problems, but the AC5 gives it another long range attack that the Marauder lacks.

I like the Crusader because it is good at long and close ranges. The SRMs in the legs is pretty weird, but it gives it charecter. It also has good armor protection.

Moonlapse, the Marauder and the Warhammer have the same armor in the side torsos. Once penetrated the Marauder has only one thing in each, barring HS placement. And with the stated terrain, or any terrain for that matter, it would be hard for the Marauder to remain at long range against the Warhammer.

You'd be surprised how long the Marauder could keep the range up, by forcing the Warhammer to come to it and using a lot of backpedeling. This also forces the Warhammer to advance across open terrain, if the Marauder plays it's cards right.

I used these tactics in a duel between a Marauder-D and a Steiner Thunderbolt; by the time the Thunderbolt was able to bring it's SRMs and other short range firepower to bear, the Marauder had stripped it of a lot of armor.

There are only 17 points on the side torsos, not much for a 70 ton mech, plus the SRM ammo is in the side torso.

Same for the MAD, except it's the AC ammo. All alone in the torso.

And an AC/5, all alone in the other torso.
