Much to my chagrin, I noticed that most of the mechs from the 3067 use XL, including the Thanatos. Here's a varient that not only gets rid of that little deathtrap, but overall helps to improve the mech for some trade-offs.
1. Drop the speed down to 4/6/4 from 5/8/5. The 300 fusion that it will now have is exactly .5 tons lighter than the 375 XL it currently uses. Also, the displaced jump jet will grant you an extra ton as well.
2. Move the MRM ammo form the right arm to the right torso. This will allow CASE to be installed as a protection for it. Also, someone wishing to be creative can now assign the mech a hand in that arm.
3. Add the remaining ton to armor- 4 points to the center torso rear, and 3 to each limb. The center torso rear can now withstand a guass rifle blast, and the limbs are slightly stronger as well.
Well?

Going from 4-6-4 to 5-8-5 is worth an XL IMO, but your varient isn't bad.

Personally, I feel that if a unit is going to have an XL, more than just a shift from one speed to the next highest has to occur to justify it. As it is, the MRM ammo is stored in the right arm. This means that no CASE can be mounted for it; in the event of an explosion, the damage would travel through the internals and right to the engine, killing it anyway. Besides, this variant should bring the cost down somewhat and the hand will make it a little more suited to places where one may be useful (my other pet peeve: almost no hands.)

Going from 4-6 to 5-8 makes getting an additional +1 to be hit very easy, so infact moving up only one step in this instance is worthwhile.

Get another pet peeve. Not every mech should be "cookie-cutter", and the hand/no hand thing adds charcter to these machines. Notice that a large amount of mechs without hands could have them as there's enough crit space available and don't.
