Here is a mech match-up I thought up over the weekend... a Vindicator VND-1R versus a Jaggermech JM6-A. At first glance this match-up appears to be lopsided with a Medium going against a Heavy. However, if one looks at each mech, one would notice that the armor and speed are similar. The main differences are in the weapons carried by each mech and who they are used. The Jaggermech can be considered a specialty mech (support) while the Vindicator is more multipurpose. It is easy to imagine in all of the conflicts fought between the Federated Suns and the Capellan Confederation these two mechs faced off against each other on the battlefield.
So, here is my question:
Would you through your support behind the Vindicator ( as you Capellans will) or does the striking power of the Jaggermech convince you that it would emerge victorious (Long Live House Davion!!) ?

If the Jagermech was facing off against a Locust, I would probably vote for the latter. The Jagermech is terrible, and one of the worst mechs in the game IMO. In this match up I would take the Vindicator.

Dude, he means the Jagermech LRM variant, wich is an oddbird and makes the outcome hard to predict.
Since I have never used that variant, I can't comment.

I think it's a toss up.

This is a remarkably close call. While at range the odds definitely go to the JagerMech, it remains to be seen if the JagerMech can keep the Vindicator at range long enough to do significant damage. AS the Vindicator closes it brings more of it's weapons to bear and loses little of it's firepower. The JagerMech can bring more weapons to bear but loses too much of it's firepower at closer ranges. Another point of contention is the ammo supply of the JageMech. With 2 tons feeding 2 launchers he will run out too quickly. The LRM's while significant weapons in their own right, just do not have the consistancy to be relied on as a primary weapon when facing a mech whose primary weapon(s) are very consistant.
In my opinion it will be a race of endurance between the two and I feel the Vindicator will come out on top more than half the time.

The Jagermech is disgusting. The LRM version, while a bit better, is still disgusting. And the limited LRM ammo makes every shot important.
The Vindicator isn't exactly inspiring either, but it carries one ton more armor than the JM. It's also jump capable and has heat sinks enough for sustained fighting.
There's a few things to keep in mind: the Vindicator needs to run the JM out of LRM ammo or get into extreme close range immediately. As long as the VND keeps out of physical combat it's got a good chance to win. I'd actually recommed that it tries to dodge LRM fire at long range instead of risking a charge from the JM.

If the Jagermech manages to knock out the Vindicator's PPC it will win. Otherwise, the Vindicator will quickly blast huge holes in the Jagermech's inferior armor.
edit: sorry guys, this was referring to the AC variant of the Jagermech; the LRM variant will probably kill the Vindicator; it carries almost as much armor (Jagermech 8 tons, Vindicator 9), and superior firepower.

You're overlooking the Jagermech's firepower advantage even at close range; don't forget the Jagermech's two medium lasers vs. the Vindicator's one. And the Jagermech certainly carries enough LRM ammo to dispatch a single medium 'mech, especially when combined with the steady barrage of AC/2 shots. As for the armor differential, the Jagermech's superior firepower, and the substantially stronger internal structure makes up for this.

It doesn't matter the variant, the Jaggermech is a walking coffin if used by it's own self. The Jaggermech can be used better if used as support for a lance but in a head to head matchup it sucks.
Although the Vindicator is not a mech that many would consider, it is a cheap mech nonetheless therefore you can have more of them or use it to round up if you are playing with a BV limit.
But since this post is about a head to head matchup, my opinion would be that the Vindicator with superior mobility would make it hard for the Jaggermech to hit it.
Once the Jaggermech runs out of ammo, it is really defenseless and would be good target practice for the Vindicator.
If the Vindicator gets lucky and manages two hits the left torso with the PPC: Oh what a spectacular explosion would that be!
