The big fault with the later battletech storylines is the fact that every house seems to have every mech. Most are not exclusive anymore besides the very new designs such as the Fafnir and the Templar. I mean, you dont find Challenger II and Abrahams tanks in use with every millitary in the world do you? It would add more individuality to the houses if they stuck with their own designs with the occasional rare mech salvaged from other houses the clans and old Star League mechs.

Sorry, but I disagree completely. Back in 3025 almost every 'Mech was found in almost every House. Sure, there were a few House variants, but they were the exception rather than the rule. Now we have specific distribution lists for every House. Most Houses do not have most units. Furthermore, distribution of units is also subject to House policies. For example, a unit made in the FWL is more likely to be sold elsewhere. But the FS, rarely sells units to other Houses.

Are you speaking of novels or the board game? I understand the writers might not always check their facts, but mech lists for the game are usually pretty good.

Even in 3025 there were plenty of units which were generally restricted to specific houses. Here's a list of 3025 units which are not ubiquitious across the Inner Sphere. Zeus, Commando, Dragon, Jenner, Panther, Enforcer, Jagermech, Valkyrie, Orion, Awesome, Victor, Vindicator, Catapult, Javelin, Hermes II, Blackjack, Hatchetman, Trebuchet, and the Dervish. Most of these are limited to one or two houses for the most part.

Say it loud and say it proud!! In the 3025 era there were a number of House specific mechs ( as Mud has correctly pointed out). A few authors did the right thing first...that is checked their facts before assigning mechs every which way. Unfortunately, the more prolific writers did not and it went downhill from there.

It is possible and highly probable that every House had every mech ( at least for intel purposes), but not the numbers to feed the front line units. Depending on their perceived capabilities, these mechs would be specially assigned, kept at research facilities, or if deemed too weak, sent to backwater worlds or sold off.

For example, you would not see the 4th Davion Heavy Guard using Dragons as part of their heavy lances. (However, a specially tasked strike force may use Dragons when infiltrating Kurita, for secrecy or against Liao where the mech was rare if not totally unique opponent).

Well, the Hatchetman was originally unique to House Steiner, although the Dracs eventually captured one or two, but they were never able to replicate the design. I would think that capture and salvage would be the primary means through which 'mechs change hands; I'm sure the Capellans have captured a few Enforcers over the years and put 'em to work, and the Fed Rats have a few Vindicators in their units. At least one Kurita pilot is known to pilot a captured Enforcer still baring Davion colors and insignia.

I think we are both saying the sae thing...that although these mechs may show up in various House armies, they were not at all common. Correct me if I have completely missed your point.

True that the Draconis Combine was not able to replicate the design, as the ideal of the samurai is so firmly ingrained in the minds of DCMS MechWarriors that wielding an axe is considered barbaric.

Samurai wield swords which is why the NDA-1K No Dachi design wields a 3.5T katana.

Back to the original discussion, and as stated previously, you found certain designs only in certain houses. A lot of mechs were originally from the Star League Defense forces. What General Kerenski didn't haul with him in the exodus, the Houses comandeered into their armies. But with the amount of conflict that the sucession wars created, and planets changing hands a lot of equipment was salvaged and captured.
I think it is reasonable to find designs manufactured in the Draconis Combined in FedSuns hands, and vice versa, because of the amount of conflict these two Houses have been througout the years.
Now as an example it would be very rare to see Liao designs like the Vindicator in Kurita hands unless this was salvaged or captured from the FedSuns, in which case they would be hard pressed for spare parts.

Yeah.. there are way more unique mechs now than in 3025. Then, there were only a few, like Vindicator or Zeus... while most mechs in the TRO 3067 are used in one or a few houses...
