Hey, I had too much free time today! Don't look at me like that!

Targeting & Tracking System: Starlight LX-1

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
==Overview:==
A fast fire-support mech, quad-type. It is not known who commissioned it, or
even how many were built. They were sold by Newhart Interstellar, but this was
apparently not the real manufacturer. The Ant-eater is mentioned in three
separate battle reports from the times of the Amaris Coup and the 1st
Succession War. After that it went the way of the dodo.

==Capabilities:==
The Ant-eater carried an AC/2 for long-range harassment of enemy units. The
only thing really unique with this weapon is the way it was mounted: in the
mech's head! This made aiming the weapon easy and fast, but the noise levels
in the cockpit can't have been comfortable. Two medium lasers made up the
secondary weapons, and the mech also carried enough armor to slug it out with
contemporary light or medium mechs.

==Battle History:==
There's mention of an Ant-eater in the Battle for Terra. A Star League Assault
company enroute to Paris blundered into a withdrawing Amaris mech company ,
suffering some light damage. The SL company commander's Atlas lost it's
satellite dish to the ANT-8R's accurate AC fire. This left the unit without
air support long enough for the enemy to withdraw.

An Ant-eater managed to reach the news in the fighting on Lopez, October 2786.
A Marik force seized an airfield defended by Capellan militia mechs, including
an ANT-8R. The FWL troops watched without interfering as the ANT-8R dueled
their Blackjack for close to an hour after all the other defenders were
defeated. Neither mech could inflict enough damage on the other to end the
battle quickly, but the Marik pilot refused to ask for help. The battle ended
with the overheating Blackjack doing a desperate Death-From-Above attack. Both
mechs were destroyed in the crash, but the pilots managed to eject.

The Battle for Saffell in 2787 is the last known appearance of an Ant-eater in
combat. A battered lance of salvaged mechs, including an ANT-8R, was sent to
watch the left flank of the Davion counter-attack. A Kurita lance of Stingers
and Wasps ambushed them, downing a damaged Archer. The lance might have broken
and ran if the Ant-eater hadn't gotten lucky right then. An AC shot hit the
Kurita force leader's Wasp in the head, knocking the pilot unconscious. The
other Davion pilots rallied and blew a Stinger to pieces, routing the rest of
the Kurita lance.

==Notable 'Mechs & MechWarriors:==
Mechwarrior John Cassius is notable mostly for continuing his career. He was
the pilot of the Ant-eater destroyed on Lopez in 2786. The FWL commander who
captured Cassius also enlisted him to replace the now-forgotten pilot who
dueled him.

Mechwarrior Rita Holdsworth was promoted for her actions on Saffell in 2787.
She was among the defenders of the main spaceport when Kurita assaulted it,
and is noted to have fought bravely against overwhelming odds. A group of
fleeing infantry picked her up after her crippled Warhammer detonated. The
veteran warrior was promptly assigned an ANT-8R captured from the militia when
Davion seized the planet. The Ant-eater was destroyed in the final battle
driving the Draconis invaders off-planet, but not before she managed to claim
a damaged Victor as a kill. The Victor was repaired and presented to her
together with a post as lance commander.

Well, no one else has said anything, so I will. I think this design is really cool. It has a purpose and decent, if not exceptional, firepower. The fluff is well written as well. Since I tend to play in "slightly" altered universes, I think I'll dub this 'Mech cannon for my current campain and let the 'Mechwarriors trip over one or two and see how they react. God help them if they run behind partial cover.

If I were to create a "9" version I'd reduce the speed to 5-8 and upgrade the AC2 to an AC5...the extra fire power will be worth it in an extended fight.

I'm with Chihawk on this one. Drop the speed a tad and make this an AC/5 slugger.

However.... I'd make this level three just for one thing: A turret. I know you loose some of the fluff, but it might be interesting.

One other idea, have you considered replacing the medium lasers with an SRM system? Might be interesting with infernos... create a smoke screen to cover a retreat.

This is truely one of the more interesting designs I have seen lately.

If I make it level 3 I can as well go with a torso-mounted cockpit. That frees up a total of four critical slots in the head, enough for a larger AC. It would change the fluff slightly, but not critically.

I thought about it, but that would have cost the poor thing either a lot of firepower or a lot of armor. Better just do the old run-around from cover to cover and take potshots at people otherwise engaged.
