This mech is not a significant improvement over the original panther. Upgrading from a 4/6/4 to a 5/8 leaves it just as worthless. Also it is still a mech that runs very hot very fast.

I've got to step up to the plate to defend the Panther. The original is a fine 'mech, capable of doing the job of 'mechs twenty tons heavier. This variant makes it far more capable of supporting a fast-moving raiding force, really the only hole in the original Panther's abilities. As for the contention that this 'mech runs hot, it can run and fire its main gun, and build up no heat. I don't see how that is overheating?

Sorry, my bad. I thought it was an ER PPC.
Still it's too slow for it's weight class. I can get a Heavy that moves as fast and would do that job much much better. Panthers all suck, and always have.

Remember this is a level one design, not a level two 'mech. Thus, the general speed goes down. 6/9/6 is only slightly above average in 3050; in 3025 it's a hot rod. And as for Panthers sucking, this is what you'll be saying the next time one sticks it's PPC up your @$$

To call a Panther mission specific is acceptable, but just to say they suck is going to far. They are in the same park as the Urbanmech. Not really used in the front line assoult missions, but in second line garrison unit they rock. The may move the same speed as an assault, but they are much cheaper, and the PPC still kills off the incoming light recon mech. So why waste money on the Assault?

Garrison 'mech? The Panther is a fine front-line machine in my opinion. If I can I always throw in a few with heavy or assault companies as cheap fire support. Keep 'em in the back where they won't draw too much fire and the armor is never a liability. The Panther is also fully capable of holding its own against a Centurion or an Enforcer, at a slight disadvantage. Most heavy 'mechs will go down if two Panthers gang up on them. Two Panthers are superior to a Warhammer in my opinion, for the same tonnage.

To Mud; I've never been hurt by a panther in any year setting. Much less had one shove a PPC anywhere, much less where the sun don't shine.

To Oaf: I'd prefer a heavy, takes out multiple of those lights, not just one before it's lancemates kill it off. Also, if it is used as a support for other light mechs it can't keep up well, and thus the lance is likely to get overextended and killed off, and/or lose the Panther to an end around. I've always hated PNT's and always will. They are death traps, and can't shoot and jump w/out overheating.

Most 'mechs cannot shoot and jump without overheating, except for uber-munchy DHS monsters. It's called game balance.

As for your comment about the 'mech being used to support light lances, only a fool would use the Panther to support a scout lance. As though a scout lance needs fire support anyway. It's job is to find the enemy, not stick around and destroy them. Listen carefully: The Panther's place is with the mediums and heavies. Don't let it's weight fool you; just because it is a light 'mech does not mean it's a scout 'mech.

Is overheating all that bad? No, I can live with it, if it makes them dead...

exactly...going over heat is fine if I deal some damage in the process. I can get the heat points back; the armor points are gone forever.

I used the support example because it was in some fluff on one of the panther's, or someone elses post..can';t remember which. But ya know, this is probably just me. I never played level 1, I came in with level 2 being mainstream and level 3 coming out. I've only been playing since 1997, so I love DHS baby

Boo. My reply got et! Must be a hungry dog around here or something.

Teh Panther is one of the to ten 3025 mechs, hands down. THICK armor, a hammer in the PPC, runs ice cold, has jump jets when you need it, and after spending half a dozen rounds tagging the foe with the PPC, you get to add in crit-seeking SRMs when they get near. There's just no rangeband safe from the Panther, and it isn't going to run low on ammo or run hot the entire battle. You have to *work* to stop one.

The Panther can easily, *easily* hang with mechs ten, fifteen, even twenty tons its senior, and often come out on top. It's just that good.

-- Old Dog, felt the Panther's bite many a day!
