Vampire and I go around on the missile thing constantly. A lil' dance we do.

My take is that they aren't Stingers, but great big ol' bottle rockets. You aim enough vaguely that-a-way and hope something connects. They don't lock on, after all. They just sorta fly and go boom.

There's, what? 120 to a ton? So, they weigh, what? 8 pounds each? That's smaller than a can of Pringles, for goodness sakes.

-- Old Dog, chasin' rockets.

He said they are smaller than a can of pringles, not heavier
If you take a missile the same size as a can of pringles it will weight more than 8 pounds. Think about it, explosive compounds actually have quite a high desnity, so even a small brick can be heavy. Then add fuel and such, and your looking at a lotta weight in a small package. For instance, look at these pages on the AIM-9 Sidewinder Air-To-Air missile:
http://www.chinfo.navy.mil/navpalib/factfile/missiles/wep-side.html
http://www.hqmc.usmc.mil/factfile.nsf/0/75b0842883e0798f8525626e0048ad88?OpenDocument
That missile is much bigger than a pringles can, but it does weight a whopping 186 pounds! If you calculate, based on the length of this missile vs its weight, how long an 8 pouncd missile would be, its only about 5 inches!!! That's way smaller than a pringles can.

Now you see why I talk about these things being bottlerockets, not missiles.

It's like packing a soda can with propellant and a lil' blasting cap, and shooting them at a target. They're pretty weenie in teh grand scheme of things.

That's why you shoot LOTS of them at once.

That would be why my favorite fire support mech has 12 LRM-5's, lotta to hit rolls, but get more damage than 3 LRM-20s on average, and same number of missiles.

Yeah, but that feels chincy.

Missiles need a tuoch of reworking, so that the weight isn't messed up like this in the future. 12 LRM-5's shouldn't work every bit as good, if not better, than three LR-20's. That's just ... wrong.

-- Old Dog, fixed it, but not everyone agrees.

Back in 3025 when this stuff was designed it didn't work out as well. Those 12 LRM5's generated 24 heat while the 3 LRM20's only generated 18 heat. That was balancing back in the days before double heat sinks. Nowadays.... well, you can't use the LRM5's to clear minefields - surely that's worth something!

sides all those LRM-5s weigh more than the 3 LRM-20s also. I just like it that way. :CACKLES:

Hrm.

12 * 2 tons = 24 tons.
3 * 10 tons = 30 tons.

I know that math isn't my strong point, but...

Isn't 24 < 30?

I seem to remember 'The hungry fish always eats the BIGGER fish'...

-- Old Dog. just wondering.

oops, sorry, when I looked at the LRM-5 weight I looked at the OS version on accident. You are right. Good catch. And I was looking at clan LRMs just so ya know, IS LRMs 4 LRM-5OS would equal 1 LRM-20 even up, but under clan 4 LRM-5OS weigh 6 tons, and the LRM-20 weighs 5 tons. Oh well, sorry for the mixup.
