I seem to have a bit of a thing for putting MG's on my mechs. Am i strange?
I mean if you have 2 tons left on a mech with little room for heat and armour is top notch. Why not (especially with clans) put 0.5 tons of ammo and 6 guns? Add alot of short range firepower (exellent when charging), good for vehicles, and dont really take up much space. Only downside is ammo explosions.
Is this a valid point or have i taken one gauss slug too many?

I'd add medium lasers before MGs...although a mech's MOS would really determine what I'd add...

I have done that with a number of my designs Clan MGs especially the new light MGs are quite useful. Indeed over on the Heavy Metal Pro forum we have a couple of mathematicians that do these programs to figure weapon damages at various ranges and the Clan LMG is a very efficient weapon for the weight.I have several designs that pair it with heavy small or medium lasers.

I think MGs are a must if you expect to fight infantry often, place them in either light 'Mechs or heavy ones.
Plus with the optional firing rules being proposed they are good weapons, where you can put 2 MGs there's room for a pair of Heavy MGs

isn't there a (house) rule for pulse lasers being more effective vs infantry?
I would generally always facoe a Mlas of some sort over an MG and its hazardous ammo. Let the Infantry and Vehicles travelling with the mech take care of infantry. Besides, thats what jump jets are for, get away from infantry while frying them.

If I am going to face infantry, I would rather kill them at long range where they cannot fire back; if I do have to face them up close and personal, I just send in a couple of Wasps with infernos loaded into the SRM-2 packs.

I tend to add ECM and TAG's to fill up "excess" tonnage (I'm not much of a C3 fan, so that's rare.) - assuming of course that the armor is maxed to within a couple of points. Infantry is rarely enough of a threat IMHO that it needs special weapons dedicated to it. Of course, a no-heat weapon always has advantages, but I'd rather stick on a couple of RL10's - they're great crit soaks and can be decent weapons if used properly.

I am with you Wanallo. I usually stick a couple MGs in if I have tonnage left. Damage is damage no matter where it comes from. Sometimes you need just a couple more points of damage to get the win.

| It just makes sense I have one of my Blizzard variants that packs two Heavy Medium lasers and 8 light MGs this gives it a damage potential of 28 points and no worries about heat and for the crit hunter lots of chances to get those "Golden BBs" and the LMG has a 6 hex maximum range

I logve MGs for space filling when I only have 2-3 tons left and either can't fit more HS to help kill off heat from another energy weapon. Heck I made an IS heavy once that had 2 tons and 3 non-consecutive crits left that i put 2 mg's and a 1/2 ton ammo on. As for clan mechs put the MG and it's ammo in an arm, Clan mechs get free case everywhere, so if it blows you only lose the arm...durr
