I'm new here, and I'm not that knowledgable about Mechs, so could someone tell me what mechs are good and which ones are not good? I personally like (I haven't played any of the games, except for the demos, I just like the pictures ):
Wasp
Thunderbolt
Templar
Centurion
Highlander
Gladiator
Enfield
Zeus
Hollander
Wolfhound
Awesome
Ulzer

I'm sure people here will give you their opinions. Another good way to go is to head on over to my Technical Readouts section. Select View All under BattleMechs. Then click on the Rating column. This will sort all the BattleMechs by average user rating from highest to lowest. That will give you a good overall idea of what people think.

My favorites, however, are:

Spider
Wraith
Penetrator

O.K. Starcrusader, you just asked one of the most difficult questions in Battletech because there are so many variations in tactical styles what works well for a player who has one style of play will be horrible for somebody else.Me,I like high speed units I consider anything with a speed below 7/11 to be slow I like to use mechs with high speeds and battery's of small lasers optimized for point blank fighting .I use almost exclusively lights. When I make custom designs I use chassis with base speeds around 10-15 or 12-18 I have one level 3 design with MASC and supercharger that tops out at an obscene 30.Now chances or the next post will be from some body who has the exact opposite view

Assualts. Big, beefy, and purely badass. Had to do that. I tend to play a mixture. Half of them are almost exactly like what Motown uses while the other half are slower and carry really big guns. So it is all based upon one's perception.

Some people live and die to the axiom that speed is life, I tend to favor 'mechs that are middle of the road: big enough to carry some offensive punch, but not too slow it crawls. These tend to fall in the heavy and medium categories.
Assault 'mechs are tempting for their firepower and armor, and there is nothing wrong with that, but those who favor and are good with fast 'mechs are more likely to literally run circles around them.
The problem with the fast mechs (and I will probably get in trouble for posting it) is that a ONE well place shot with a PPC, LRL or an A/C10 and the light mech is in trouble.

To determine what is a good 'mech, first find out what style of fight you feel comfortable with. What you are willing to trade to get something you want.

Pick something that has good "Rangebands" with decent mobility.

I like the highlander, wolfhound, t-bolt that are on your list, T-bolt does require close heat management tho'.

You picked out a few of the perennial favorites right there, as well as a few duds. Look at the technical readout section; there are lots of different opinions there on most of those designs.

Choices are personal, but everyone needs to have a good UrbanMech in their mech!

Seriously, as posted above, finding your playing style will help choose a good mech. Some people can excel at using what is generally considered a bad design with little or no difficulties. Buit , I agree with you too... looks mean alot.

Looks are one of the biggest reasons I stick with the 3025 'mechs; the graphic design just went downhill later on for the most part. The original Clan 'mechs look good, but most of the 3055 stuff, and especially 3060 onwards, I think looks like crapola.

Well, I have played the demos, and the I really like mechs that have gauss guns and lasers. But, I think mechs that have jump jets are very cool as well.

Now once again, as with everything said by others....It is mostly about your style and personal choice. I however like to play a good mix of weight ranges, assuming I\'m playing with enough units. Anything smaller than company size (12 mechs) gets harder to mix the weights properly. A normal company for me would be:
Point Lance
Light 7/11/0 minimum (prefer jump capable)
Light 7/11/0 minimum
Medium 7/11/0 minimum
Medium 6/9/0 minimum outfitted as fire support
Strike Lance
2-3 Mediums with minimum 6/9/0
1-2 Heavy with 5/8/0 minimum
I like the Marauder in this category, although most MAD's have slight heat issues.
Cavalry Lance
1-4 Heavy or Assault Designs with emphasis on good heat vs damage @ range potential
(Perfect for the catagory is the Thunder Hawk TDK-7Y)

I generally try to make sure mechs in the same lance can keep the same speed. This makes it easier to keep the lance together on the battlefield, and also makes sense for off-board movement. A lance where everyone goes 6/9/6 will be there faster than a lance burdened with one slower machine.

A company I just assembled; all 'mechs are 3025 tech:

Heavy Lance

Zeus
Orion
Crusader
Panther

Medium Lance

Grasshopper
Shadow Hawk
Griffin
Wasp

Recon Lance

Wolverine
Phoenix Hawk
Locust
Wasp

I feel this is about the ideal mix of speed and firepower; I only have one assault 'mech, which is a light assault and moves at 4/6. The Orion, Crusader, and Zeus all have good long range power, supplimented ably by the Griffin, Panther, Shadow Hawk, and Wolverine. Everything else can be committed to close combat. I expect the Grasshopped to do some damage up close.
