Here is another questions to make all of you think. Which mechs would you use for each position on a chess board? eg Atlas = King

This is just a geeky sort of thing that has been floating in my head the last few weeks.

There are so many options here, would you divide by house? or IS vs Clan?
real quick without much though I would come up with these, more than likely there will be better choices. (notice I left out the models and levels and I stayed strictly IS)

Pawns = Jenner/commando
Rook = Urbanmech/panther
Knights = Catapult
Bishop = Warhammer/Dragon
King = Battlemaster/Atlas
Queen = Marauder

Here is one of my versions of BT chess a la 3025 ( and yes, I too am full of geekiness)

Pawns: Urbanmechs
Rooks: Warhammers
Knights: Shadowhawks
Bishops: Archers
Queen: Marauder
King: Atlas

This is based on personal preferences and not mech related capabilities. Comparing mechs to actual chess pieces would require a few pages of comparisons, strengths/weaknesses and justifications.... my brain - it hurts!

Didn't we already do this once?

Any B'tech/chess that doesn't have the Atlas as the IS king isn't well thought out...the rest is all debateable after that.

I like the Warhammers at rook; the Knight should obviously be jump-capable, but powerful as well...Shadow Hawks maybe, or Griffins? Locusts for my pawns. I've considered making a battletech chess set, but all of the unseens i'd want to use are kind of expensive at this point.

You are all missing the best thing about this. There are nearly infinite variations on this theme. Chihawk observed the Atlas should be the IS King. However, what about all the other positions? What about a Clan Jade Falcon set? What about a Lyran 3025 set? There are many, many sets you could construct.

For example, my Lyran 3025 set;

Pawn - Commando
Rook - Zeus
Knight - Griffin
Bishop - Stalker
Queen - Banshee
King - Atlas

Now I know Horhiro has a 3025 Snake fu...err, Kurita list already prepared.

I actually knew someone that was having a hand-crafted chess set made for him. The pieces were being hand carved out of wood using the minis as a basis. Don't know if he ever got it completed or not, but it was costing him a fortune for each piece.

Hand-crafted BattleTech chess set? Now that's what I call a gift worthy of a King, or Successor Lord for us BT fans.

But why have it handmade? Just buy enough minis, paint them and place them on a chess board.

It's not really the same. If you put two sets of chess boards down, one with painted minis and the other hand-crafted minis from wood, more people would oogle at the wood simply because everyone has seen minis painted. Plus wood is more traditional.

heck just splurge and carve them out of marble, crystal of quartz. Now that would be snappy.

I do like the idea of having the clan vs IS set. I was thinking the same as most.
king-atlas
queen-either marader or warhammer
pawn-urbanmech (can you think of anything that small that can only move 1 space? )
the rest I am still trying to pad out. I am partial to using a phoenix hawk as the knight though. One of my best friends from college had one that was awesome. Anything that it could not out run it could outgun, and anything that it could not out gun it could out run.

Why not just use minis...it would still be expensive, but probably not as much so?
