Howdy. A quick one for the computer nerds... I mean geniuses out there.

My Dad recently installed Norton AntiVirus 2003 on his computer. Unfortunately, he already had McAfee Virus on there. So, now, whenever he starts up his computer, as soon as he touches anything, Windows crashes. The biggest problem here is, it crashes before I can uninstall McAffee, or Norton, in order to get things to run again. Any suggestions?

Alexander (Computer challenged lately!)

That's odd that both would cause it to crash like that. One thing you can do is start it up in Safe Mode. It doesn't load anything excpt what is necessary. From there you should be able to uninstall one or the other.

And if I'm wrong, I'm sure Hardware will yell at me.

I thought about that, but for some reason, Safe Mode wouldn't kick in...

Just making sure, but you do know how to get to safe mode for your OS, right?

That's why they tell you not to install 2 anti-virus programs.

You can have as many firewalls you'd like, but only anti-virus. If I underatnd how they work correctly both programs see the other as a virus which causes lots of system problems.

Apparently not anymore. I'm used to the old Windows 98, and now everyone is using (including myself), Windows XP.

I looked on their Website, and it told me to do all sorts of things, unfortunately, none of the options they give me seem to work...

And it's not even Monday!

At boot keep tapping "F8" until safe mode begins.

Unless you have alot of critical data on your C: drive, which by the way is a bid no-no. There is nothing like a good fresh clean start all the way back to a format of C: and re-installing the OS. Depending on how much software you would have to reload you might want to consider it.

I remembered that right after I signed off and went back to my Dad's. I figured Safe Mode was the way to go... but, I've been away for a long time, and the neurons are firing a little slower now and all....

But, I've got it all fixed up. I uninstalled McAffee, and gave my Dad a quick lesson on computers. Things should be okay for a while... or atleast until I start pretending I know stuff about MY computer again!

How about installing the client for MS-Networks and creating a account for your Dad without administrator privilegs so that he cant install anything dangerous on this computer ?

I did that for my home PC. Neither my girlfriend or any of the kids can install or uninstall software. I can't tell you the number of times I left the 5 year old alone to play Rescue Heros Lava landslide only to come back and have him fiddling around in areas I didn't know he could get to. Although, he can never tell me how he got there.
