OVERVIEW

After re-taking Tokasha MechWorks Alpha, Clan Hell’s Horses had the ability to unleash a new generation of war machines upon its unsuspecting prey. One of the earliest designs to see production is the highly unusual Nightmare, which represents an all-new offshoot of OmniMech technology; the combat quadruped.

The Nightmare is heavily based around the Thunder Stallion fielded by second-line Hell’s Horses forces, but also combines newer technologies to create an awe-inspiring machine.

Unlike the Thunder Stallion, which designers changed in the final stages of pre-production, the Nightmare is meant to be a totem 'Mech. The machine looks much like a barded warhorse of ages past, and the few warriors thus far assigned a Nightmare have heightened the resemblance by painting their 'Mechs in silver and chestnut colours.

Like the Nightmare of myth, the 'Mech is capable of breathing fire, thanks to the Flamer placed as fixed equipment in the head. One of the few drawbacks to the design, the Flamer is mounted directly beneath the cockpit, resulting in a large amount of waste heat being dumped into the cockpit whenever the Flamer is fired.

The 'Mech also carries twin ER Medium lasers in its chest, a practical consideration given the fact that a Quadruped 'Mech cannot torso twist. These provide moderately good protection and will also disrupt infantry attacks from the rear.

CAPABILITIES

As one might expect from the Hell’s Horses, the Nightmare, in any variant configuration, is an exceedingly versatile and lethal design.

The most commonly fielded configuration mounts a PPC, paired ER Medium Lasers, and a Medium Pulse Laser in a turret-like assembly from the left torso, whilst the right side of the 'Mech holds a Artemis-equipped LRM-20, equipped with enough ammunition for 18 full salvoes. A heat sink mounted in the each leg of the 'Mech gives the Nightmare the ability to use the bulk of is weapons continually without building up excessive heat.

Variant A is the command model of the Nightmare, equipped only with paired ER Large and ER Medium lasers in the torsos. However, it is capable of jumping 120 metres and the lasers are linked to a Clan Targeting Computer. A massive EW suite with broad-band ECM, a TAG designator and an Active Probe make facing this variant a dicey prospect, particularly when one considers Clan Hell’s Horses’ high concentration of ‘Huey’ artillery tanks. For anti-infantry work, the Nightmare A is also equipped with a pair of ER Small Lasers mounted in the forelegs.

Variant B is a deadly infighter, carrying a Large Heavy Laser, paired Medium Pulse Lasers, and quad-linked Streak SRM-4s. 3 additional heat sinks added to the chassis allow the 'Mech to control some of its overheating worries; it is also outfitted with a Targeting Computer to enhance the 'Mech’s accuracy.

Variant C was built for use within confined terrain and carries a bewildering array of short-range, quick-cycling lasers linked to a Targeting Computer. 8 Medium Pulse Lasers and 8 ER Micro Lasers make short work of enemy infantry and 'Mechs alike, and the integral Flamer can be put to greater, more devastating use. An Active Probe allows the Nightmare C to hunt with ease within cities or other limited-visibility environments.

Variant D is more or less an Archer clone. It is equipped with two Artemis-equipped LRM-20s, an ER Large Laser, and an ER Medium Laser.

Variant E, the newest of all, is equipped with a pair of ATM-9s, a pair of Medium Pulse Lasers, and a pair of ER Medium Lasers. This versatile design is quickly gaining favour amongst the Hell’s Horsemen.

DEPLOYMENT

The Nightmare rolled off the lines at Tokasha in early 3064, and as such, only a few Clusters have access to the design. It is currently sparing deployed through the Keshiks and scattered throughout Alpha Galaxy. When Tokasha is bought fully on-line, the Nightmare will become the standard-issue Heavy 'Mech of the clan, replacing the ageing Summoner.

MY BLURB

I’ve always been fascinated with Quads because (at least on the surface) they offer such incredible advantages over standard bipedal 'Mechs. However, it turns out that there are few decently built Quads, although they’re getting closer with things like the Tarantula, Barghest and Sirocco…not to mention the excellent Thunder Stallion.

So I decided to do the inevitable and build a Quad OmniMech. The Hell’s Horses seemed a good candidate for deployment of the 'Mech, which became the Nightmare.
