OVERVIEW

In 3065, the NACMS began a program to return Null-Signature Systems to its armies. Using information encoded in the Gray Death Memory Core and information bought from operatives in the Capellan Confederation, the design team managed to create a near-perfect copy of the old League system, and one that is a perfect match for the Stealth armour used by the Capellan Confederation.

Time has corrupted the original meaning of the word “Harlequin”. In these days, it is more often used to describe jesters, but during Terra’s Middle Ages, the name had a far darker meaning. It was said that when a truly evil man died, sometimes the Devil would decide not to torture him in Hell for all eternity, but instead send him back into the world as a demonic ghost horseman, to spread chaos and death in his wake. During the English invasions of France, the term “Harlequin” (the French word being “Hellequin”) was applied to the ravening armies of Longbowmen. Although this new BattleMech is lacking in long-range firepower, the Harlequin will certainly sow chaos and death in its wake.

CAPABILITIES

Due to the nature of its missions, the Harlequin had to be outfitted with equipment that emphasised stealth. The targeting computers and communications equipment used by the Harlequin are revised versions of the equipment found on the old Star League Exterminator, but enhanced with the addition of a Guardian ECM Suite to block enemy targeting devices and jam their communications. The Jump Jets employed by the Harlequin are substantially modified versions, insulated inside of heat and noise baffles to produce barely more noise when the 'Mech Jumps than when a civilian hover vehicle is in motion.

The 'Mech’s weapons loadout is also geared towards its stealth role. In the days of the Succession Wars, more Exterminators were detected and destroyed because of their AMS and LRM systems than for any other reason. Learning from this, the design team used an all-laser loadout. The lasers are all tuned to fire in the invisible spectra, and they are all heavily insulated to prevent the escape of waste heat and noise when discharged. One large and five medium lasers make up the Harlequin’s weapons array; combined, they can do enough damage in a single barrage to destroy most light 'Mechs. However, the use of laser weapons compounds the heat dissipation difficulties which plague 'Mechs equipped with Stealth gear.

Although the 'Mech is equipped with three additional heat sinks, nothing can protect the pilot from dangerous heat spikes whilst the Stealth armour system is engaged. The pilot can use all of his Medium Pulse Lasers whilst in Stealth mode, however, and despite their short range, these weapons can do significant damage to an opponent, particularly if their fire is concentrated in one area.

Finally, the 'Mech is equipped with a full twelve tons of armour plating. This heavy armour, combined with the 'Mech’s Stealth capabilities and excellent maneuverability, should protect its vulnerable XL Engine in combat.

DEPLOYMENT

At present, only a handful of Harlequins exist. All are being tested at top-secret NACMS sites, and may be deployed for field testing against former Prince Davion’s rebel forces.

NOTABLE 'MECHS AND MECHWARRIORS

Due to the top-secret nature of the testing process, no pilots or 'Mechs can be identified.

COST ANALYSIS

When produced at a factory in large numbers, a Harlequin should cost about 13 Million C-Bills.

MY BLURB

At the moment, I am reading a book called “Harlequin”, by Bernard Cornwell. It’s pretty good- he’s not David Eddings, Michael Stackpole, or Terry Pratchett, but he’s not bad either. Anyway, the French call the English Longbowmen “Hellequin” (“Harlequin”), which, as I outlined above, means a Hell’s Horseman. At five o’clock this morning, I awoke with inspiration- build a Stealth Davion 'Mech, and call it the Harlequin. With Davion’s links to both France and England, it seems pretty appropriate. And the 'Mech would seem to work well.

Why can’t inspiration strike at midday, when the brain is awake and aware and it isn’t single-digit temperature? I couldn’t get back to sleep until dawn.

Anyway, I really wanted to equip this 'Mech with Triple Strength Myomers. Unfortunately, I couldn’t fit them in. That would have been great- a Stealth 'Mech that kicks for double damage. I’m still working on that idea, but I think I’ll have to go to a heavier, slower chassis to do it.
