The base idea behind this design is twofold:

The first is that most artillery units sacrifice speed for either armor or firepower, making flight from the field difficult. By using a unit known for its speed, this problem is solved.

The other idea is that, realistically, who'd expect a Griffin to be an artillery unit in the first place?

Artillery is a specialist thing in the Btech universe, so the XL engine is justified. This Heavy Griffin has better mobility than any vehicle-based artillery I can think of. Well worth the expense.

As for thinking of it... Who would think of a Catapult as artillery? House Liao, for one. When it's spotted the enemy knows it, that Arrow IV launcher is rather bulky.

The thing about the Cataplult is that, as a missile boat with large missile bays, it made sense to me that eventually someone would try and cram a missile-based artillery system on it.

But how pray tell would putting an artillery unit on a recon/raider make any sense? It really doesn't. It goes against every principle of the unit's design. The average commander would be looking at the obvious mechs- O-Bakemonos, Nagas, Catapults, etc- or the vehicles, not this guy.

Not look at this guy? It's got a fragging Arrow IV launcher instead of a Right Arm! I'd spot it as soon as it comes into visual range!
