Earlier today, I used some Sharpie brand permanent markers on some minis that I had to touch up their paint jobs (the minis were Reaper brand).
Even with one of the minis not having been primed, the markers appear to be doing the job almost as good as paint on them. I'll re-examine them in the morning to make sure, though.
I have a few BTech minis that also need to be touched up, so I think I'll try the markers on a few of them as an experiment.
What I'm using are the Twin Tip markers (approx. $6 for four colors) which have both the normal tip and a fine tip (which allows a little bit of detail).

If you wanna be able to get some REALY good detail in there, try one of Sharpie's Ultra Fine markers. Those things are almost as tiny as a Gundam Marker.
Actually, that's funny. The School and Office Supply place where I work sells Micron Pigment Markers, which are basically Gundam Markers without the name brand and about half the cost.

What's the average price point for these markers?
I can justify the Sharpies in that I can also use them for marking boxes and such, but since I've basically stopped cartooning it'll be hard to justify to myself a calligraphy pen or the equivalent if it costs over a certain amount.

Microns are excellent, especially if you're looking for a good fine line technical marker to do the line work on your minis. They retail for about 1.50 a pen, and you can find sets of a range of colors (6) for about eight dollars at larger department stores (Meijers, WalMart) _________________ "Slavish adherance to formal ritual indicates one has nothing better to think about." -Natahsa Kerensky

A trick I've used from time to time to get a really sweet shiny red, is to paint a mini in a flat red base, then go over the whole thing with a wide point red sharpie, which acts as a 'candy coat' just like in automotive painting, then give the thing a final coat of gloss.
The Microns people are mentioning are great for panel lines, but one thing to note is ALWAYS work in daylight, so you can see the area's the ink didn't flow smoothly. Ambient daylight can highlight flaws and imperfections in your work that don't show up under normal conditions, and this is especially true of working in inks.
And just be sure to seal your work when your done. A thin coat of sealant can go a long ways towards extending the life of your paint jobs. Just be sure the sealant your using doesn't bleed the inks (or you ruin the whole thing). I've found most 'permanant inks' don't really run if you use testors dullcoat for your final pass, but most gloss finishes do tend to make the inks bleed like crazy. (which when using as a candy coat works to your advantage, but with panel lines.....) _________________ Happyness is just a word to me
