I had a gamer sales guy tell me an interesting thing,
Computer game =50 hours play $60
Computer game sequel= 50 hours play $60
Computer game sequel again= as above
Role Playing books= 500 hours Play $30
Role Playing books update= 500 hours $35
What is the difference? They will still shell out $60plus for every game and sequel but scream bloody murder for a book that lasts a long time and can be used a lot. I thought about that logic and agreed. Maybe because toy can thumb through it and it brings back memories, more resistance. Only time I have not upgraded a game? The new Mechwarrior character system, that sucks.
AWAD- got all three books for $70 this weekend.

Not exactly. Comp game = 50 $, ok. You're playing it. And the sequel worth 50$ too. Good stuff. Some are better, try Arcanum 
A few games books might pass, but certainly not all of them. People don't pay for stuff they're not going to use. Who needs a rule book for 50$ if they won't ever play the game? Just pass on it and buy Macho Women With Guns instead

I'm going to sidestep the WotC "Sell-the-same-product-ten-times" maneuver by not buying another AD&D book until 2 days before I die.
That way, I have a couple days to read all about what they did with the AD&D name, and save myself from having to buy the 15 editions that came out between now and then.

That would mean that I would have to be good enough at a game to actually win an event....
...that's a BIG assumption.

I looked at them and I just couldn't go with it. I like D&D when I was younger and seriously considered buying 3.5 when I heard about it (especially since I never bought 3.0)...until i saw that I needed to buy nearly $100+ worth of books, specialty dice, and whatnot just as an introduction to the game. I can see really sticking it to the customer once they're committed to the game, but that is a sizable chunk of money just to get your foot in the door.
It would seem to me that game companies would stand to sell more of the introductory materials (be it books or boxed sets) if they were willing to sell them at cost (or even for a loss) in order to get the customer hooked. Either that or put some bonus in the box (a sourcebook, some random minis something).

What specialty dice? All the dice you need, you needed for the other version of D&D...
And all you really need is the PHB and the DMG, some dice, some pencils, some paper and your imagination...in today's world, that is nothing...
Granted, when 3.0 originally came out, they sold the PHB, DMG and MM for $20 each, but in the 3.5 release, you are getting ALOT more material than what you got in 3.0...

Well, unless I can swipe the dice needed out of a Monopoly box, then I need the specialty dice and my local Waldenbooks or Barnes and Noble don't seem to stock D4, D8, D10, or D20s.
As far as getting more material in those books, maybe, but is it really worth paying 175% of the cover of 3.0? Why not just call it 4th Edition if so much has changed or been added?
I understand about the only things needed other than the main books is imagination, but the gaming hobby really relies on people buying the add-ons more than the initial product. Of course I don't need Sourcebook X, but it does have the rules for that superkewl sword/gun/monster/superpower...
One thing I've always advocated is putting the basic rules and setting info out for free. For one thing it saves on printing costs, and it gets the customer hooked for the price of writing amd putting out a PDF. And all the money he doesn't spend on the basic book (or books) can be spent on the add ons. It just seems insane for me to drop $105 plus tax (MSRP) in a bookstore (without discounts), just to play the basic game, no matter how nicely laid out the book is.
And you don't get all the people bitching about how they had to buy Edition X, just to have to spend the money to buy Edition Y 2 years later as a bonus.

Mine do sell those kinds of dice...
As for why not 4.0? Because not that much has been changed...they did not do a complete revamp of the rules like they did between the second and first and the third and the second editions...they revised a few things here and there...
As for cost? Yes...I thought it was a very fair price in comparison to all the other games that are on the market...
