Cooling Jacket

A cooling jacket is a piece of equipment specially designed to reduce the heat effects on a mech by a weapon. Like heat sinks cooling jackets use coolant to syphon heat away from the weapons they are attached to and deposit the heat in a location where it can be bled away from the mech. Unlike heatsinks, cooling jackets are dedicated to a particular system on the mech and therefore cannot aid the mech should it have heating problems.

Cooling jackets consist of a refrigeration system densely packed around a particular weapon. The system is surrounded by a housing designed to make the system as thermally separate from the rest of the mech as possible. The end result is a system that takes far less space than the heatsink system but has a lower heat dissipation to mass ratio than the double heatsinks in common use.

Gameplay: Cooling jackets reduce the heat generated by the weapon they surround to 0.
The mass of the jacket is a function of the weapons mass and the heat generated.

cooling jacket mass = weapon mass/5 +.5 tons per point of heat

Round to neasrest 0.5 tons unless using fractional acounting rules. For weapons that have multiple heat levels possible, such as RAC's, use the maximum heat possible to design the cooling jacket.

Cooling jackets take up 1 critical space and must be placed in the same location as the weapon. If the jacket takes a critical hit the weapon starts producing heat as it would normally.

ex. a cooling jacket for a large laser has a mass of 5 tons (5/5 + 0.5*8 = 5)

Crossover with hard point rules: cooling jackets can be placed in hard points.

RP stuff: Cooling jackets are tailored to fit a specific weapon and cannot be fitted onto another weapon. If you wanted you could make a cooling jacket that only covers part of the heat generated by a weapon. However, that would have to be hand made and expensive. Mass market cooling jackets would be designed to cover the whole heat of a weapon.
