From another board I read. Opinions, agreee, disagre?
Kind of a tangent here, but it used to be that public-media types, DJs and journalists, got into it for a love of the subject-matter, be it music or any other given topic, to have the chance to get up-close and personal with that topic. Nowadays it seems (to me) that the majority of these folks are in it to pursue not the celebrity or significance of their chosen topic or subject-matter, but to pursue their own celebrity status. I see this in a lot of my students who are on that track, and I see it in a great many of the media-folk whom I meet. And, given my insane tendency to make mountains out of mole-hills, I have to say it really bothers me, not because some DJ doesn't know squat about Rush, but because these are the people in charge of delivering information vital to the democratic political system. A democracy with no efficient means of delivering accurate (if not precise) and unbiased information to the populous is not a democracy. The news-bearers can not be the news, if democracy is to properly function, but that's just what's happened or happening: media-folk just don't get or just don't care; they want to be the news.
What a great observation, DJB, and as usual, very well presented. Since the advent of CNN there is an urgent necessity on the part of producers to fill air time and keep up ratings. Because of this, biased news reporting has sadly become the norm. First, it was laughable, but like you, I'm really starting to worry about this topic. Knowing how trends swing from one extreme to the other, I wonder if the next big push will be for media and journalists to begin policing themselves, a la truth.com.
My hope is that when people finally become satiated with the quasi-news/docudrama presentation of breaking world events the trend will slow, but I doubt it.

As soon as there was more than one channel giving news you had ratines as each channel was competing for viewers.

Reporters even get themselves killed while trying to get the best news possible. They've lost a few in Israel lately, in Gaza and the West Bank areas . One of the best cases was an idiot leaning out behind a corner with a big camera set on his right shoulder. Aimed straight at a tank, that promptly mistook the reporter for a Palestinian with an RPG. BOOM! He did make the news, but not as he might have planned.
