Well...the last month has been pretty hard for me to deal with as I have been anticipating the show so freaking much. I got to see them last year by luck more than anything...and I was more than pleasently suprised by the absolute power of the band.
For those of you who DONT know who TSO is...let me explain. Trans-Siberian Orchestra is a blend of heavy metal, orchestrial and operatic vocals. The core of the band is the standard heavy metal ensemble, made from the legendary rock group Savatage. Backing up the band is a 10 piece string orchestra, and a few other odds and ends from the muscial field. In all there can be as many as 30 people on stage as the vocalists come out (different number for different songs).
The music they play is incredible in my opinion. Most of the stuff they play are remakes of some very wonderful classic Holiday sings. They are most famous for their version of "Carol of the Bells" which is actually named Christmas Eve, Sarajevo (which in turn is actually a Savatage song called 12/24). Other music they play are hard rock renditions of The March of Kings, selections from the Nutcracker, and from the Beethoven's Last Night album, Mozart and Beethoven pieces (as well as some others thrown in for fun). The real meat is their original work. Being a Rock Opera group, each of their albums tells a story...and each of their origial songs leads the story along that much more. Its a great collection of talent working in the project and on the road...its a shame they only come once a year...
Now...the concert itself...
The first half of the show follows the "Christmas Even and Other Stories" album...a story about how God sends and Angel down to Earth to find out what the humans have done that is of any worth. So the story follows the Angel around as he searches for something to take back to Heaven. A great story with some incredible songs and a great narration. If this hour long segment were all that was included in the show...it would be worth the price of admission...the next hour and a half would make you feel that you didnt pay enough for the show (tickets were a relatively low $50 for floor seats, BTW).
At the end of the main story, the band is introuduced...which can take a while caus elike i said...there are about 30 members. After that they go into free mode. The following hour was filled with a few other songs from Christmas Even And Other Stories, the Christmas Attic and Beethoven's Last Night. A special treat was a few of the new songs they worked on as well for their next Christmas album.
A truly amazing mixture of talent on the stage. The most noteable performers were the 2 lead singers (one having been with the band since the Savatage days, another they pulled straight off of Broadway). The best treat was being able to see Al Pitrelli again. If you are into to hard rock at all, this name means a lot to you. If you dont know him...I'll let you know that he has been the lead guitarist for bands like Alice Cooper, Savatage and Megadeath.
The show was pretty damn perfect...beter than last years in my opinion. SO...if you get the chance, go and see these guys. You will not be dissapointred....oh yeah...and to let you know about the audience. Kids as low as 8 years old...and there was a couple easily in their late 60s in front of us. Its the most diverse you'll ever see for a hard rock group...and its good for the whole family...so I really do reccomend you go see them. If you cant see them, I reccomend adding "Christmas Even and Other Stories" to your CD collection. You really wont be dissapointed...
