Self Propelled Long Tom Heavy Tracked Chassis

Introduced: 3068
Mass: 70
Movement Type: Tracked
Power Plant: GM 140 ICE
Cruising Speed: 24 kph
Flank Speed: 32 Kph
Armor: Durallex Standard with CASE
Armament:
1 Long Tom Artillery Piece
Manufacturer: General Motors, various others
Primary Factories: various
Communication System: Overlook J11a
Targeting and Tacking System: Brightstar 17 Mk. II

Overview
Plans has been in development for some times, a self propelled Long Tom Artillery Piece using the most cheapest parts available as well as being the most maintainable of any self-propelled artillery piece. Although such concept did existed before, no one considered putting it on a low technology tracked chassis. The self-propelled Long Tom heavy chassis is designed to provide a mobile platform with one of the most powerful artillery pieces in existence while being available to most military forces even including the backwood planets' militias.

Capabilities
Although the speed of the heavy chassis was slow, most infantry platoons can keep up with it, particularly the motorized and jumpable ones. It carries a very large ammo bay for the piece, carrying an astonishing 60 of Long Tom shells. This allowed a large variety of shell types useful to any mission type it may encounter supporting any force. The high ammo capacity allows it to fight any protracted battle. The shells are protected by CASE, although the designers and even the company GM, who hold the rights to the plans and the chassis itself, were unsure whenever that was enough to render the chassis salvageable and the survival of the crew. Data show that it does give the chassis a high probability of being salvageable as well as the Long Tom piece itself. CASE was the only high technology part they bothered to fit on the chassis. It have an additional bonus of protecting the chassis from the catastrophic detonation of its fuel tanks. Although there are no secondary weapons, because of its incredible long range fire ability, it is intended to be use in junction with rear sections, supporting the main elements from afar and relying on others to provide protection from closer threats. The same reasons can be applied to the Long Tom being only front mounted, its long range capability allow a much larger area to be covered. This allow them to dispose of a turret that could risk it be locked in an awkward arc while concentrating the protection over the chassis. Another reason and the one officially supported by the General Motors is that the Long Tom piece is simply too heavy to make a turret worthwhile. The chassis is protected by 7 tons of Durallex Standard Armor, providing it enough protection to withstand one or two counter-fire shots from opposing artillery batteries directly as well as standing up to fires from closer threats before its accompanying escorts could take care of them. Due to its cost and ease of deployment, a lance of those can often help to turn the tide of the battle against the opposing side. It is mobile enough to avoid many of the counter batteries’ fires.

Deployment
Nearly all the Houses’ main forces and many militias deploy many of this chassis thanks to its low cost and the subcontracts with other factories across the Inner Sphere. The Federate Suns fields most of the Self Propelled Long Tom Heavy Tracked Chassis due to its close ties with the main Manufacturer that is the General Motors.

Variants
At expenses of the armor, ammo capacity, and cost, a fusion engine rated at 210 allowed for a cruising speed of 34 kph and flanking speed of 54 kph powers the second variant. It only carries 50 shots and 5.5 tons of armor.

Uhhh, why? I already have several Mobile Long Toms and Viper Artillery Trucks. What makes this useful to me?

The standard Mobile Long Tom has better comm. equipment, and resupply is not a problem, because I never allow my arty to operate alone.

So, I hope I don't seem abrasive, but what makes this a good buy over, say, the older Mobile Long Tom?

Avalibility and cost would make this sought after. I would like to see a higher grade of electromics but its not bad.

not to mention I made a Russian mobile long tom piece, the Ogre, which was able to go in depth 0 water and had a full platoon of infantry to act in support (which it could carry).

Availability, sure. Cost - certainly not. The old one goes for less than 1,300,000 C-bills with all four support carriages included.

Really? Last time I checked it I thought it was more than that.

Well, they don't tell you what brand it is, but the Mobile Long Toms carry a half ton of Comm. Equipment, 2 tons of Targetting gear and about 1 ton of "support" equipment.

Well, I checked it a bit closer since you sounded so sure...There appears to be something fishy here. Looking at my HmVee, the main vehicle has been entered as ten tons lighter than it`s supposed to be, according to other sources. Then again, those sources also claim it has a 190-rated ICE while a 65-ton vehicle moving 2/3 gets by with a 130-rated engine in HmVee This is very odd?

Probably a difference in the Record Sheets as opposed to the TRO. I'll do some experiments later on this oddity.

Experiments complete. The TRO version is Level 3, while the 55 ton is level 2. According to my calculations, a fully loaded 65 toner with over sized engine will still make 2/3. Which leads me to believe it is superior. It's about 300k more, but in the end, still less that Hurlbut's all in one. It also has another .5 ton of Comm equip that the standard lacks. And here it is for those who don't have TRO:3025 (Revised...sigh) lying around.

'Oversized' engine, but it works out perfect when you count in the 30 tons of ammo/support carriages it hauls around.

I reworked my HmVee version in the same way as your try, it does make sense. Too sad the game designers made the rules after the vehicles in the old days
