Found a used copy for $10 and picked it up. After convincing my 98 SE that it really did need Direct X 8.1 I finally have it up and running.
Anyone else out there playing/played this game with any tips?
I have and beat the original Mechcommander, so far these seems to be just and upgunned version with a few more options and graphics.

salvage, salvage, salvage.
Use all your points to salvage mechs on the field, it costs you nothing and they are all repaired at zero cost to you. In the early phases salvage fire ants and urbies and sell them to build up your c-bills. You'll need them to salvage bigger, better units later.
I always try to keep one mech of each weight class. This way it allows you to mix and match your team to take every ton of weight allowable. Don't underestimate the Raven or the Men Shen, in this game they are invisible until the other mech has direct LOS.
Good luck.

Wow, that last part is good to know. I have the game, haven't played it in a while. Unfortunately I think I lost my saved game when I rebuilt my computer last fall.

Also, try get quite a few Sharks, and outfit them to your purposes. I can usually beat any level with a Legion of the little Liao 'Mechs and take no losses.
Always try to have SOME weapon ins every range bracket. At least for token defense.
Stay away from missiles, they have a slow travel time and if they hit a disabled/salvagble machine (disabled by a fast laser or autocannon round) it may explode and cost you some C-Bills in missed salavage, or worse, damage you.
Fixed Arty is great when you need to defend something. Arty can level many, MANY times its tonnage in other units when they are forced to try and apporach.

Thanks for the input so far.
Is selling salvage worth it 2? In 1 the only reason to sell was to clear up space for new salvage.

Yes it is worth it. Salvage everything you can after a mission, and sell it before the next mission and you make more than you pay for nothing. In the later missions all the clan tech cost money so you need everything you can get.

And mines, whoa boy, mines. When you get to a few of the defensive fight, a minelayer can cripple and destroy incoming enemy units, making them much easier to deal with.

I prefer the Steiner Arty apporach. Why cripple what I can destroy outright? I also like putting them near turret control buildings...they can't capture them that way.

If the Men Shen is so invisible, why was it always the first mech to get dropped anytime I used one? My computer really had a hate on for that mech. _________________ "Those who beat their guns into plows will plow for those with guns..." -Thomas Jefferson

because if it's destroyed you can't salvage it.

Upgrade the armor. Anyhow, ECM is overrated.

Touche. But I still like an overwhelming defense. In a defense mission you can't pull back and regroup...

My biggest gripe with this game is the hardwired stuff in mechs.
Otherwise, its a pretty good game.
I used the original pretty effectively for a Real Time Tourney a while back. Took me three weeks to make the maps, but dang they were good!!! _________________ Loyalty above all else except honour!
