I suspect this is some publicity stunt by white Wolf.. but laugh riot to read anyway
Absolute best line must be this
Mage: The Ascension... espouses a belief system of a most pagan and dangerous nature as well as openly encouraging sexual deviancy and fornication as well as Catholicism**

Wow, what a Nut case. I think he needs more help than the people he seeks to help. I must say that too found his comments on Mage to very amusing.
But he does have speak a smallt tid bit of truth. It is those people who take RPGs way too seriously that give role-playing a bad reputation. But I think that the vast majority of role-players are safe from what Pastor Ramos fears we are suffering from.

Growing up in a conservative Christian home I have seen these arguments, and many of them are truely backed. Some (read: not all, most or a lot) do take it too seriously, and they do things in the name of the game.
But this Pastor is my bane...close minded people that want drastic change from people that have chosen their own way. The homosexual bashing is what kept me from laughing, as Vampire hoped we would.
Balance, acceptance and patience are what is needed to save those few individuals from mental divergence (at the point where they are commiting suicide, etc, it IS a mental health condition) and danger from themselves.

A great read, really great. I actually laughed out loud reading this thing and suprised the hell out of myself.
And ironically enough, in one of the perpetual projects I have going, I'm trying to write a realistic, rabid, Inquisition-style religious group. Reading this gave me quite a few stylistic ideas that I think I can work in. Should I write them a thank-you note?

Write the church a note, saying the sermon gave them inspiration into a close minded group of religious warriors?

A group that's going to be one of the main foils in a setting that might evetually turn into a role-playing game, yes. Or just a place for stories to be written in, I'm not sure yet. _________________ "A man who does not speak his own words, does not think his own thoughts." -me

this pastor is no better then a cultist himself. i'm going to be starting my sermon hood soon, and i play RPG's... thou i mainly stick to technological rpgs like battletech, star wars, and robotech.
he is a radicle on the same as the pharocees and saducees that had christ crucified. he claims to know to much, and calls to many to listen to him and thru his flock he attempts to gain more followers. he is as much a cultist as those he preaches against.
now i will admit, that there are dangers in role-playing.... even the strongest of mind can resone a near truth [or well argued lie] into a firm belief in there minds. i've been there, and regret it not for now i am stronger and can see the warning signs. and i'd consider myself a strong willed man.
the point to remember is that it is only a game, and that it holds no power. i personely stear away from white wolf products as they give me a very uncomfortable feeling, and i trust my feelings. i'd advise the christian nation as a whole to avoid them, but hey thats just my opinion. i just don't see any good coming out of playing a vampire, mage [not your dnd type], or demon.
dnd i touch and go in my opinion. its a fantasy fighting game, that has no relivence to the real world. just be aware what deities you praise for what resons... if you stick to fight classes then theres no real harm, as your not praising any false gods even only in the spirit of play.
basicly what it comes down too is this, each person is different, each game is different, and if your uncertain about a game even abit then you should prey to god for guidence or ask your group to play a game you are comfertable with like Battletech.
boy did that get long.

Sounds to me like this freak show is taking most of his cues from existing propaganda. And the fact that most of his decisions are based on White Wolf isn't helping anything. And I bet this guy hasn't even sat through a gaming session with the average group, either. (My D+D group it's almost always arguments or jokes with a bit of playing in the middle.) I've actually seen some pretty religious role players and am one myself (I spent the week of Halloween in a religious debate on another site).
These instances described are little more than flukes; people who shouldn't have gotten their hands on the games in the first place. I'm bi-polar (although without an official diagnosis) with paranoid tendencies, and I still know the difference between fantasy and reality.
And most people that I have seen simply ignore the existance of the pantheon in D+D- aside from picking a diety for the clerics, there's really not an issue. And anyone stupid enough to worship the demi-god of farts (I got bored one weekend) in real life deserves what they get. There's a reson why real-life gaming never really caught on.
Also, the guy is claiming that any 'attacks' on gaming gets the gamers angry. What would happen if someone made ceaseless attacks on the guy's religion? The fact that he slammed the Methodists tells me that he's not exactly playing fair himself.
I remember that back when the board was on the old format, someone posted an essay that was for RPGs. Did anyone ever save it?
I'll comment more in a bit.

I've posted warnings about this guy on two other boards that I go to. And on both boards, there's more *lurkers* there then posters here, so a lot of people are gonna know about him. And knowing half the people that would respond, there's gonna be a petition to get him removed.
My question: What would Bishop Sheen say about him? (He's about the only reason I sometimes watch EWTN.)

Ok, now that is pretty tacky if White Wolf is trying to boost its sales by slamming religion.
On the other hand, if its authentic then the pastor is a few bananas short of a bunch. Ripping on RPG's is so behind the times, and has proven to be without foundation. I haven't heard them mentioned at any Christian events I have gone to in years (but I don't go to that many, and I do live in liberal CA).
As a side note, RPing does have a tendency to draw some of the more unstable people. My first year in undergrad dorms there was a guy who got really into MUX'es and live-ation RPing. He ended up assaulting another student and getting kicked out of school.

WOW....religion is not an excuse for ignorance...
but often times it seems people take advantage of what might be right or wrong
to them, by exploiting falicies/misconceptions in a religion...nm thats just stupid and probobly most of its untrue.

You`ll always find someone willing to use things for his own ends. Be that something religion, politics or business and his ends power, glory or satisfaction.
Father Ramos was invented to help along WWs latest game. So the game company is willing to pull a "joke" like this to make gamers feel good and thus increase sales. What`s new with that?
