Okay which would you guys go with on a 40 ton vehicle, tracked, with a Fusion engine?
SRM4 or SRM6 or an LRM5 or LRM 15? (each would have a ton of ammo plus the launcher)
And on a hovertank 40 tons with the same engine?
And finally both with an IC Engine?

What role do you intend the vehicle for?
LRM has more specailized ammos available while SRM are lighter and do good damage at close range where the IS LRM has minimum range.

What is it's mission profile.
If it is more of a harassar, go with the LRMS.
More of a slugger, hit 'em hard type SRMs.
For engine types, it really doesn't matter.
Hover go with SRMs.
Tacked and wheeled could really be either.
But I think wheeled would be better for LRMs and Tracked would be better for SRMs.

The engine is irrelevant for the purposes of type. It only means one is either faster/carries more stuff and is more expensive. I'd say LRM5/15 for Hovertank. Leaning toward the 5. You can harass them and remain JUST of hitting distance. Very annoying. On the other, I'd take SRMs, learning toward the SRM4 because of ammo and also because it can be switched for LRMs and MGs fairly easily.
Really though, you should always mount some lasers on a Fusion power vehicle. You get 10 free sinks, I say use'm for all it's worth.

Well, if you're going with a multi-role design, add both SRMs and LRMs. If you can't do that, then use the SRM4/LRM5 because those can be switched out rather well.
