Overview:
The Atlas, Most fearsome mech in history. Until about 30 Years ago when A couple of minor
events happend. The Grey Death Memory core, The Clan invasion, The Fed Com Civil war. All
the things that have pushed Battlemech progress to levels that have surpassed even the Star
Leagues mastery of Mechs. But in the push for progress the Atlas has fallen behind, or it's
been sidetracked into Models that are less then what an Atlas should be. The AS7-U is one
attempt to bring the Atlas into the modern age.
Capabilities:
The AS7-U attempts to Meld the 2 main features of other Atlas Models into a single chasis
while retaining the basic survivability of the Original. The first goal is to maintain the
raw close range nastiness of the Atlas. While the Code Red LB-20x does an excelent job of
this on its own, it almost plays second fidle to the Blocks of MML's in the oposite torso.
The Multi Missle Launcher is one of the new technologies that prompted the initial study
into a possible new Atlas variant. The Initial Idea was to replace the LRM and the SRM
packs with a group of MML's. This in turn would save weight and allow the other weapon
systems to be beefed up. The result of this plan was multiple MML systems giving equivilent
Long range firepower of the old LRM-20 for a similar cost in weight. At Short range however
the MML's come into their own, dwarfing the damage potential of even the Cannon. This comes
at the cost of collectivly being even more massive then the Autocannon.
The Second Goal was to incorporate the longer ranged energy weapons seen on so many modern
Atlas Variants. Early attempts to replace the Arm mounted Medium Lasers with Large lasers
proved to be an overburden to the Atlas's targeting computer. Later attempts either
overstressed the heat capacity or forced a reductioni in other combat systems. The AS7-U
uses another new Technology, The Light PPC, to merge the longer range that has been long
desired with out the risk of using XL engines or a reduction in other weapon capabilities.
This is still a compromise solution however. Solutions used in the past gave better
firepower at range. In defense of this new arangement however The Defiance B3M Medium
lasers that have traditionally been found in the arms of the Atlas were retained in a new
body mounted location..
The Fatal flaw in this design may be the lack of CASE. Both the LBX and the MML which form
the core of this Atlas's offensive capabilities take up so much room that CASE can not be
effectivly mounted. The major attempt to at least lower the chance of a catasrophic ammo
explosion was to place the ammo away from the main chasis, and then to add Double Heat Sinks
to Buffer the Ammo bins. Hopefully any critical damage will be absorbed by the Double Heat
sinks before it can penatrate an ammo bin.
