Overview:
Though The Hell Horses reinvented Chemical Lasers near the end of the 3050's They never
were pursued as vigorously as one tanker crew in within the Horses ranks could of hoped for.
For several years this crew tried to go through proper channels for this weapon system to
be embraced, only to be rebuffed what was still a Mechwarrior centric system. Finally in
3065, as the tanker crew was approaching Solahma ages, they decided that they have had it
and declared a trial of possession for the resources they needed to demonstrate the value of
Chemical Lasers. In a Bid to stop such a distasteful venture before it could begin the
conservative Mech based forces bid a cluster in defense. Not to be stopped the Tankers
Commander Bid any an all forces that would join her. A Mini Civil war almost ensued as
Protomech and Vehicle crews across the Hell horses domain moved to join the crusade. Trials
were breaking out everywhere until the Khan stepped in and ordered garrison commanders to
allow those who would join the Trials offensive side to do so. In the end Almost a full
Galaxy of conventional forces gathered to face a cluster of Mechs. Once again the Khan
stepped in and decreed that it would be wasteful to have so much of the clans assets used up
over what should of been a simple matter, and would not both sides agree to use only a
fraction of their available forces. Both sides agreed leaving a single star of Mechs to
face a Trinary of conventional units. The Mechs never stood a chance.
Capabilities:
Having won their victory on the field of battle the Tanker crew turned their attention to
creating a unit that would showcase the power of Chemical lasers so that None could deny
their potential. This design would have to be Identifiable so as to give an observer a
yardstick with which to measure results, yet so improved as that no one could have any
doubts of the results. Eventually an Ontos was decided to be the testbed for the new
Chemical Lasers. Well known for its extensive use of energy weapons the Ontos would server
as an Ideal yardstick.
The First step was to strip out all the Medium lasers, Power ampliphiers and heat sinks
already found on the Ontus. The LRM's were briefly considered as worthy of keeping, but in
the end it was decided that this tank would be a demonstration of Laser power. Later
Versions when they came could have actual combat versatility as part of their design
philosophy. This Ontos was made only to impress.
And Impress it did. The equivalent of twenty Medium lasers were crammed into this Ontos.
In a combat demonstration "The Thing" crewed by the tankers who started it all destroyed
nearly a star of light mechs before they could get a Handle on it, and even then they only
managed to take it on by rushing it from two sides at once, allowing one of them to get a
clean shot off. The other fell to a barrage of targeting computer enhanced Lasers.
Notable MechWarriors:
The Commander of the Tank crew eventually rose to the rank of Galaxy Commander. She and her
crew were killed covering the withdrawal of Clan Hell Horse from Clan space. Her Production
model Ontus IIC Accounted for 3 kills on that day, reminiscent of a day years earlier when
she proved her Vision of what could be.
