Overview:
The Arachne was an Ice Hellion design that followed them into the Goliath Scorpion touman.
It played an important roll in the trials concerning the use of augmenting drugs. Untimstly
though it was phased out of use as the Scorpion Empire was established. The cost in
implants and Frenzy was too high.
Which did nothing to prevent it from being adopted by the Clan Enclaves.
Capabilities:
The 'Fang' variant of the Arachne is a more recent Blood Spirit design. It makes sense
given their inclination towards melee focused protomechs. Operating in a similar niche to
the Nekomusume, the Arachne is considered the more robust and harder hitting option for more
practical minded warriors.
The primary system on this variant is the quad melee system. The oversized jaws are capable
of a much greater expression of force then a typical protomech. So much so that most light
mechs can be crippled in short order. Even heavy mechs can not stand up to a concerted
attack by a point for long. But mostly light mechs are the prefered prey, especially "Bug"
mechs. An ironic coincidence given that the Arachne's name, but also, no coincidence as the
mechs spider like appearance was built for high ground speed. This means it can catch most
light mechs. For the few it can't, it can at least provide area denial defensivly against
intrusion by truely fast mechs.
Backing up the main features are the Arachne's traditional LRM batteries. Some of their
ammo reserves were reduced in favor of heavier armor coverage befitting the units melee
roll.
Variants:
The original Arachne was a longer ranged skirmisher/spotter. Its primary system was a TAG
backed by 5 LRM-1 tubes with additional ammo reserves. The design was generally considered
lacking in offensive capability, but its spotting abilities made it a useful component to
add on top of a force.
