Hello! I'd like to share a tale of unexpected greatness from a recent intro game I played, and see if anyone else has a story of a mech that did far better than you expected.
For me, it was the Quickdraw 4G. It doesn't seem to have enough armour. It points two of its four medium lasers backwards. The weapons mix feels underwhelming at range and underwhelming up close.
Opposing force chose a mix heavily focused on short range and speed. One new player, another who knew their stuff. Wolf's Dragoons Wasp (6 small lasers), a bog-standard Jenner (4 ML, SRM, not enough heat sinks, all the fast), Hatchetman 3F, and the Trebuchet with 3 ML, 2 SRM 6's. They all wanted to get right up in our business.
I threw the Quickdraw into the fray and it did WORK. Luck was on my side, and they painted the armour diagram pretty uniformly instead of breaking through. Caught the Trebuchet's ammo bin. Grounded the Jenner with a double-crit on gyro, with the rear facing lasers. My other mechs all fell, but the Quickdraw emerged victorious after kicking the leg off of the Hatchetman, surviving some chops in the process. Other units certainly contributed, but the Quickdraw was the hero.
Perhaps it was due to being the heaviest machine on the table.
Maybe we can blame the opfor having no piercing weapons save for the AC10 and hatchet of the Hatchetman.
It helps that the Quickdraw spread its hits taken, and wasn't properly focused upon until my Centurion and Urbanmech were destroyed.
Regardless, it was a great day to be a Quickdraw pilot, something that I cannot say is true most days.
