Hello!
I hail from a city with a mascot. The city is Prince George, BC, and the mascot is a 26ish foot tall man made out of wood. His name is "Mr. PG".
Of course, I'd like to make a record sheet to represent this wooden man as if he were to begin walking, foolish as this may seem.
Main feature, I'd like to define a new mech armour type. Do some sort of ratio analysis of the stopping power of wood vs steel by weight, do some napkin math to determine how many armour pips per ton 'wood' armour would give me. Of course, it'd probably also cost a LOT of free critical slots. I'm fine to do this myself.
That's all well and good, but I'm not sure any of the mainstream mech builders will let me add a new armour type. Does anyone have any advice on how to mod MegaMekLab or something similar for this?

Great idea, but I'm going to stop you right there and say don't bother. A round from a 50-caliber machine gun goes through up to two feet of wood. So wood armor wouldn't stop any vehicle or 'Mech weapon in the BattleTech universe. _________________ www.210sportsblog.com

Respectfully, I fully understand that this thing is impractical, perhaps hubris, even.
I'm not making a viable unit, I'm making a walking joke. I'm already considering house-ruling it to take extra damage each turn if it gets hit with flamers, infernos, or goes above a certain point on the heat scale.
I'm already wondering how low of a BV such a unit would end up being...

Use the rules for Commercial Armor for industrial mechs (or support vehicles) and add a BAR of 0; adjust damage to hits using the XTRO 1945. _________________ one must work hard to cultivate the mind and body. and one must always cultivate the mind.

It would be simpler to paint the "Mech's armor to look like wood... _________________ www.210sportsblog.com

Genetically engineered Clanner super-wood.

Just make sure it takes double damage from flame/plasma weapons. Hell, even have it burst into flames when your mech overheats.
As for your question about modding the data for megamek lab, I'd recommend popping by their discord channel and asking there (its listed on their website). Its coded in Java, which is fairly easy to edit once you know which library the armour code is stored in.

I know it's been a while, but for anyone else also wanting to define new armour types, and finding this thread:
It's hard. The folks in the MegaMek discord were very helpful in letting me know how much a pain armour coding is, and how each type is closer to hard-coded instead of being a simple array or library entry. Maybe it's easier than that and they're just trying to keep that sort of development/modification away, but I've resigned myself to kludging it in a less dignified way.
I'm not using all of the available tonnage for armour, and breaking out some image editing tools to make the 'wood' labels on otherwise empty criticals. I'm only doing this for one record sheet, but it would have been nice to be able to introduce house-rule armour types, like a form of ferro that's halfway between IS and Clan grade.

I believe them as a lot of mine is hard coded as well. I've made sure new features are "configurable", but I still need to go back and ensure everything else is configurable. I do have these grand ideas about custom equipment, armor, etc. Some day I'll get there... maybe... _________________ Mordel Blacknight - Site Administrator

Well, I'd hope that if that does eventually happen, it will be for better reasons than "some fool on the forums wants to use scrap lumber as mech armour"
And for what it's worth, I have no ill will or disrespect towards the MegaMek folks, they're doing incredible work in making accessible and powerful tools. Same goes to you folks here, the online-hosted unit builder is wonderful.
