Overview:
Initially intended as a simple weapon upgrade package for the venerable CVL-45A, the project
almost entered development hell as more and more features were being considered for
inclusion. With 3 years of development and nothing to show for it, the Blackshield Company's
notorious R&D department was offered one last year to produce results or face budget cuts.
With the fate of their comfortable lifestyle at stake, the various designers, scientists and
mechanics all gathered and productively disagreed for three and a half months before
deciding upon what they do best; scrap the whole project, start from the beginning and
pretend it was all part of the plan to avoid punishment and damage to their reputation.
The result of this decision was the uncreatively named CVL-80A 'Cavalier 80'. Referred to by
some as the 'Cavalier 2.0', the CVL-80A boasts increased firepower and slightly better
defense thanks to the use of newer technologies such as Ferro-Fibrous armor. The LRM 5 and
SRM 4 of the CVL-45A have both been replaced by a front hull mounted MML 7 with 1 ton of LRM
and SRM ammo while the turret mounted flamer has been replaced with a light pulse laser for
less heat.
Finally, the most significant change was the replacement of the Large laser with a Light
PPC, allowing engagements at greater range for less tonnage and heat at the cost of some
damage. To make up for the PPC's issues with close range combat, the extra tonnage was used
for the installation of a medium pulse laser that, when coupled with the MML 7, enables the
CVL-80A to engage targets at "melee" range much more effectively than its predecessor.
Capabilities:
Barely more expensive than the CVL-45A and far more versatile, the Cavalier 80 is able to
engage targets at all ranges to a fairly competent degree. Utilizing the extensive weapon
loadout, it is able to reliable hold or push the frontline while presenting a notable threat
to all but the heaviest of enemy units.
Much like before, it is best to use the CVL-80A in a medium range brawler role, using its
superior range and firepower to provide covering fire for allied units before it is allowed
to move up under their respective cover. The Light PPC and MML's LRM ammo also allow it to
provide long range fire support, both direct and indirect, at an effective level, though
such use is still not expressly recommended.
Deployment:
The CVL-80A 'Cavalier 80' is meant to be a frontline unit more than anything. Engaging the
enemy directly at medium range is where it shines but thanks to the inclusion of the medium
and light pulse laser along with the MML 7's SRMs, it is fully capable of combatting
opponents that decide to get too close.
Thanks to its unchanged design philosophy, the same tactics suggested for the CVL-45A apply
to the CVL-80A just as much, if not more so. It is best to deploy them in small groups that
alternate between close and medium range as they push the enemy back through volume of
covering fire. While the first group provides said covering fire, the second should move
into a good position and allow the first to then move up in the same manner.
In addition to this, the Cavalier 80 is also far more capable at utilizing its supporting
weapons. With the added range and firepower granted by the PPC and MML 7's LRM strikes, it
can reliably act in a long range support role while, as mentioned before, the pulse lasers
and SRMs mean that it can just as effectively engage in close combat. As such, alternative
tactics are far more viable without sacrificing effectiveness in the conventional.
Variants:
The CVL-80A has no variants as of yet; too recent and a design meant to be innately
versatile on its own being the cause.
Notable MechWarriors:
None; even if a vehicle crew did attain fame, it would only be in the territories of the
Blackshield Company and thus of no significance to the major powers.
