Overview:
Created in parallel to what would eventually become the CVL-80A, the PL-2-80A 'Paul II' was
developed with the similar intent to introduce a modernized variant of the increasingly ages
PL-50 platform. Given a new set of Ferro-Fibrous armor for additional defense, the PPC was
replaced by a Large pulse laser connected to an advanced targeting computer as the primary
weapon. Similarly, the flamer and medium laser were replaced by the same MML 7 that had been
used for the CVL-80A.
This radical change in loadout, paired with the original design's proven success, left the
Paul II largely dismissed by many despite its combat potential. This situation only worsened
when the the SRKR-80A 'Shrieker' project entered production, largely overshadowing the Paul
II's presence and leaving it as an afterthought at best and a failed experiment at worst in
the minds of the general public. A fact which Paul Bauer himself found absolutely
infuriating.
Underappreciated and underproduced, the PL-2-80A 'Paul II' is a rare sight even in the best
of cases, usually acting as a supporting unit to other, far more ubiquitous designs. Despite
this, those few crews that have had a chance to test it in combat swear by it; a vocal
minority that usually finds itself clashing with the stubborn members of the 'older
generation' and the increasingly arrogant emerging community of 'mech pilots within the
Blackshield Company.
Capabilities:
Similar to its predecessor, the PL-2-80A 'Paul II' is fast and heavily armored while still
packing a punch. The incredible speed afforded to it as a hover vehicle allows it to reach
behind enemy lines and wreak havoc while the combination of a targeting computer and a large
pulse laser helps nullify the penalties of its own movement and makes it even more likely to
hit.
The MML 7 further enhances these abilities, providing a potentially devastating close range
option and a decently viable long range engagement weapon that makes up for the large pulse
laser's limited reach and allows the PL-2-80A 'Paul II' to provide indirect fire support in
situations where it is unable to freely move into a good position.
Deployment:
Like the PL-50A 'Paul', the PL-2-80A 'Paul II' is best utilized in blitzkrieg tactics,
forcing the enemy to immediately redirect their focus to it or be devasted by accurate large
pulse laser fire on their flank. In some cases, it may even be advisable to outright ignore
the enemy frontline and reach for their backline support units, relying on the damage
potential of repeated alpha strikes to cause major damage before an effective response can
be mustered.
Unlike the original PL-50A, however, the PL-2-80A 'Paul II' does not become exponentially
more dangerous when more than one is used. This is due to its main weapon's limited range
and the MML 7's limited damage potential. Nevertheless, two PL-2-80A's together can still
cause so much damage on their own as to make more advanced two-prong-attack tactics largely
unnecessary.
Variants:
The PL-2-80A 'Paul II' has no variants as of yet; too recent and without nearly enough
demand or renown, it is unlikely there will ever be any variants in the near or even distant
future.
Notable MechWarriors:
None; even if a vehicle crew did attain fame, it would only be in the territories of the
Blackshield Company and thus of no significance to the major powers.
