Overview:
Riding off the success of the Cerberon project, the Blackshield company's R&D Department
wasted no time in immediately requesting additional funding for a new creation. Like any
first timer mistaking beginner's luck for genuine skill, a schematic was drawn up for what
was envisioned to be "the face of modern combat", "the new dawn of frontline warfare" and
"the Blackshield Company's response to all doubts!" along with many other, even less
creative tag lines and slogans.
Twice did the project almost fall into development hell as more and more features were
promised; what was initially promised to be a absurdly light 15 ton high speed unit that
blurred the line between battle armor and 'mech turned into a 60 ton overcomplicated mess of
a design that was outright rejected by the state. With funding largely squandered and
realization setting in, extensive revisions began; hours of overtime and rivers of cold
sweat fueling the desire to see this project through successfully.
The initial ER Large laser was replaced with the tried and true Light PPC that had served
the Cerberon well. A revolutionary rotary laser concept that never worked was similarly
replaced with a triangular array of 3 Medium pulse lasers set to fire in an alternating
fashion, effectively mimicking the feel of the initial rotary laser idea. Finally, Saria
Inc. was commissioned to use their Light Pulse laser design for the creation of a laser AMS
system for added survivability.
After seven months of revisions, the newly dubbed BTLD-65A Battlelord was finally ready and
approved for construction. Worthy of its name, those lucky few that have used it in proper
combat praise the Battlelord's ability to safely close the distance in a fight thanks to the
mix of good armor and ECM abilities, the Saria Inc. laser AMS further diminishing the
significant threat posed by enemy missile strikes. Once close, the barrage of accurate pulse
laser fire has proven devastating to even the heaviest 'mechs out there.
Capabilities:
While not a truly fast 'mech, the BTLD-65A 'Battlelord' offers enough protection to safely
close the distance. The combination of pulse lasers and a targeting computer help to largely
mitigate the accuracy penalties from movement and range, allowing pilots with even average
skill to reliably land shots with at least one, if not more, of the medium pulse lasers. The
light PPC also allows the Battlelord to engage targets from further away, once again
assisted by the targeting computer to mitigate any penalties, albeit not completely.
The laser AMS, Guardian ECM and decent armor primarily ensure enemy missile boats cannot
reliably damage the 'mech before it closes the distance. Even when close, if the enemy lacks
an ECCM field, they will ensure that SRM strikes will be far less consistent and effective
than in most other engagements. Finally, heat management is relatively easy, the occasional
alpha strike being the only real threat to overheating.
Deployment:
The BTLD-65A Battlelord is by far best used to apply constant pressure on a front. In some
cases, desperate though it may sound, it is even advisable to outright accept the 'mech as a
sacrificial pawn to force the enemy into whatever position you desire. Regardless of the
scenario, one should always seek to keep the Battlelord as close to the enemy as possible
and utilize the array of medium pulse lasers to melt through enemy armor quickly.
Should the enemy force rely on missiles and/or lack ECCM capabilities, it is important to
avoid being overconfident. While the Battlelord can and will prove most effective in such a
scenario, a lucky hit is still possible through sheer volume of missile fire. Maintain the
initial strategy to push the enemy into whatever position you prefer. Avoid underestimating
sustained LRM fire as they may utilize better range and speed to avoid the Battlelord while
taking out the other 'mechs.
Variants:
Due to its unique nature, the BTLD-65A 'Battlelord' has no variants; such a thing could not
be afforded by its creators, the blackshield company, while inner sphere powers have no need
to rely on the relatively primitive technologies of an insignificant Junta in the deep
periphery.
Notable MechWarriors:
Anyone in control and command of a BTLD-65A 'Battlelord' can be regarded as a notable man
within its 'nation' of origin. This, sadly, does not mean that anyone other than said nation
has ever heard of them.
