Overview:
One of the walking war crimes that entered the battlefield deep in the succession wars. The
FS9-ROF remained a thankfully rare and unpopular 'Mech after it's introduction. Originally
intended to tackle the rising amounts of heavy vehicles that aimed to replace increasingly
scarce battlemechs the overal weapon system lent itself too well to causing destruction on a
scale that surpassed even the original Firestarter models.
Capabilities:
Originally intended to create a veritable ring of fire, hence the ROF designation, which
would either destroy a vehicle outright, or force it to move in the open to escape the
flames. Packing no less than fourteen SRM tubes spread all over the chassis that allow for
saturation of an area of roughly a 90 meter diameter with flamable gel. The targeting system
is tuned for multi-trac with several pre-programmed patterns that allow to quickly lay down
a 210 meter long wall of fire or douse various areas all about with inferno missiles. Of
course tha this mostly proved to be an overkill and usually caused more collateral damage
than most other means of disposing of the target. The fact that the ROF Firestarter had to
get rather close to do it's party trick and that it only could fire the full spread of
missiles only seven times due to the limited amount ammunition carried didn't help it's
popularity. In the end the most destructive Firestarter to date tended to end up in the
hands of the least experienced and most morally flexible 'Mech jocks and general KOS
attitude adopted by several units further cemented it's general unpopularity.
Deployment:
It's believed that less than thirty ROF Firestarters had ever been oficially produced.
Coventry Metal considered the 'Mech a PR liability after some initial incidents and scrapped
the documentation. ROF oficially became a sort of a mech bay modification of the chassis
with Coventry refusing any responsibility for the damages caused by any ROFs. They even
issued general recall for the originally produced pieces and then issued rewards for the few
that didn't return.
Notable MechWarriors:
The Salamander: A ROF Firestarter that currently has a highest reward on it's head for
actions that are connected to abandonment of Malazan.
