Overview:
The AS7-L2 is the factory model based on the field refit performed by a Lyran General on
three AS7-Ls to make them "fit" for Urban Combat. This was an understatement, especially
since all the flaws of the field refits were able to be resolved by the engineers who worked
to bring this 'Mech to the production line.
Capabilities:
Removing the three LRM 15 launchers and one of the Medium Pulse Lasers allowed the inclusion
of four Artemis IV-equipped SRM-6 launchers in the Left and Centre Torsos and an MRM-30 rack
in the Right Torso. These were supplied by four tons and two tons of ammunition
respectively. To make room for these changes, a Medium Pulse Laser was moved to the Centre
Torso while the Double Heat Sinks was shifted to the Right Arm. The other 5 Medium Pulse
Lasers and Targeting Computer were retained in their previous locations.
While the Mechwarrior risks an ammunition explosion if they fire all the weapons at once,
leaving a 10-second interval between firing the energy and missile weapons allows for the
'Mech to cool sufficiently. A common tactic used by AS7-L2 pilots is to target a specific
component (such as an XL Engine-containing side torso) with the Medium Pulse lasers, through
the use of the Targeting Computer, melting through the armour to expose the vulnerable
internal structure underneath, then follow up with a barrage of missiles shortly afterwards
and dealing critical damage. This devastating combo can bring down even an opposing Atlas in
no more than half a minutes if executed correctly, usually neutralising the enemy in less
than 20 seconds. As a last resort, Alpha Striking the enemy has the potential to destroy
over 6 tons of armour in one hit, even if one or two of the weapons miss the target.
However, the high heat incurred from doing so means this is truly a last resort move.
To allow these changes, a small cockpit was installed to free up space. However, the design
was still a ton short of the 100-ton threshold, so the engineers decided to armour the
cockpit to improve pilot survival rates - a fact greatly appreciated by the Mechwarriors who
fight in the AS7-L2, who are mostly young LCAF recruits who have pushed a little too hard
for promotion and so have been handed the job no one wants - piloting a slow-moving assault
'Mech in the confines of an urban jungle.
Variants:
This is based on a field refit of the AS7-L, which is a 'Mech more suited to open terrain
than the confines of a city.
