Overview:
The Banshee has long been a maligned BattleMech, with many deriding its lack of armament for
its size. This has been addressed in many ways by many nations over the last several hundred
years, but it was the Lyran Commonwealth, with its Banshee-3S, that truly made it a
formidable design. This continued with each new variation they created, but this new design
not only gave it firepower, but also survivability.
Capabilities:
Built around the fusion core of the 3S/10S, the Banshee-10X's top speed is only 54 kph, but
like the 3S-MCB1, jump jets provide additional mobility, allowing leaps of up to 90 meters
distant, or 30 meters high. The design, though perhaps not as heavily armed as other
designs, does mount an impressive short-range payload, centered on a type 20 multi-purpose
heavy autocannon mounted in its left torso. This weapon is fed by a three ton ammunition
load, and is backed by a quartet of medium lasers and a small extended range laser mounted
in its head. For more long-range fire, the design is equipped with a single heavy particle
cannon. To make this weapon even more deadly, it is paired with a PPC capacitor, which adds
a third again the firepower after the capacitor is powered up. This makes the PPC hit with
the same lethality as the heavy autocannon, but at a much greater distance.
To protect this payload, 18.5 tons of standard plate encase the frame, and the autocannon's
ammunition is protected by a type 2 CASE system. Additionally, several critical systems are
protected by additional armoring. The fusion core, compact gyro, hip actuators and cockpit
are all equipped with this additional armoring, protecting them each from one or more direct
hits.
Deployment:
Only a few of these 'Mechs have been thus far produced, but have become legendary on the
battlefield for the amount of abuse they can withstand.
Variants:
Wanting to make an even more protected unit, 3 prototypes of the Banshee-11X have been
produced, using some of the same systems. These units mount modular armor on several areas
of the 'Mech, providing an even thicker hide.
