Overview:
Following the acquisition of the Vickers Data Core in 3025, the Taurian Concordat began to
not just distribute heretofore lost data and knowledge, but to actually use some of that
knowledge to restore their military prowess.
Included within the core were the complete schematics for the long-lost TLS-1B Talos
BattleMech. While several key components of the design were no longer manufactured, the
basic Talos was easily within the realm of production by the modern day Concordat.
But rather than follow the old design completely, the TDF instead introduced a modified
Talos that began production in mid-3028 and entered service in March of 3030.
This TLS-2B Talos would (over the course of the next few decades) become the backbone of
Taurian Defense Force.
Capabilities:
At 50 tons in overall mass, the Talos was firmly within the medium weight class. A
light-weight Nissan 200 fusion engine provided sufficient power for the 'Mech and all
mounted weapon systems, but this resulted in a fairly low pace for the war machine. Maximum
speed was limited to 64.8 kilometers per hour running and a mere 43.2 kph walking. As no
jump jets were mounted on the design, mobility was necessarily limited, but no more so than
the existing Centurion or Hunchback designs.
Missile armament was kept the same as the original TLS-1B: one Delta Bolt SRM-6 launcher
(with a ton of ammunition) in the left torso and two Delta Dart LRM-5 launchers in the right
torso. However, a second ton of LRM ammunition was added, doubling the number of long range
missile salvoes this new Talos could deliver.
The original Western Heavy Class 10 autocannon was no longer in production anywhere in the
Concordat. And since the weapon had to be replaced anyway, TTI proposed instead fitting the
Talos with a Donal PPC taken from one of the Concordat's Warhammer lines. This change in
the armament saved enough mass to add the second ton of LRM ammunition and four additional
heat sinks--which was now necessary considering the heat output of the Donal PPC.
With two tons remaining, TTI engineers increased the armor protection of the TLS-2B Talos to
10.5 tons, or very nearly the maximum armor plating possible for a 50-ton chassis.
Although still prone to overheating, the excess overheat generated by the new weapon systems
is easily within the capabilities of any experienced MechWarrior to handle, although TTI
does caution against an Alpha Strike due to the danger of suffering an onboard ammunition
explosion due to the sudden temperature spikes.
Deployment:
The TLS-2B first deployed with the Taurian Guard Corps in March of 3030. Current plans are
for the 'Mech to slowly replace existing medium-weight designs such as the Centurion and
Hunchback in general service over the next twenty years. Inexpensive to manufacture, solid
and reliable in service, the Talos is almost certain to become a major component of the TDF
within the next decade.
Taurus Territorial Industries has also made the new Talos available for sale to mercenary
units, as well as neighboring Periphery powers and the Free Worlds League. Sale to the
Capellan Confederation is prohibited by law, but the recent thawing in relations between the
Federated Commonwealth and the Taurian Concordat has resulted in the Talos being exported to
both New Avalon and Tharkad. Albeit, in limited numbers.
Variants:
Currently there are no variants of the TLS-2B Talos in service. However, the Samantha
Calderon Academy of Research and Sciences, in conjunction with the NAIS, is rumored to be
working on an upgraded model using recovered Star League technology. This remains only a
rumor, however.
Notable MechWarriors:
Protector Edward Calderon received the very first TLS-2B Talos to be produced since the end
of the Reunification Wars. Although since he succeeded his father he has been unable to
join an active duty unit bound for combat operations. Forced to use his brand-new Talos to
vent his frustrations with the stresses of the Protectorship on the range and in simulators,
holograms of him and his Talos ("Black Bull") are popular on TDF recruiting posters
throughout the Concordat.
