================================================================================================
Overview:
The Mauler is one of the best fire support 'Mechs money can buy, chipping away at an enemy's
armour from a safe distance, outside the range of even LRMs with its quad AC/2 loadout.
However, Arctic Silence prefers short and swift engagements, so when 10 Mauler MAL-1K
Battlemechs were captured during a warehouse raid inside the borders of the Draconis Combine
in late 3090, the chief engineers were tasking with upgrading the 'Mechs to be able to match
the needs of the missions they would be deployed on. What they decided on was quite a
radical shift from what the Mauler is typically considered to be.
Wanting to make use of the trade agreement established with Clan Sea Fox that same year, the
bright minds of Arctic Silence's research facilities on Págos decided to purchase Clan-Tech
equipment to fit out these ten Maulers - it would be a good test run of working out how to
make the two technologies work together. Unfortunately, they encountered a fundamental issue
with the Maulers that made it extremely difficult to successfully integrate the clan
technology without glitches occuring (making the Clan weapons compatible was straight
forward enough). After over 8 years of constant work and being threatened with losing their
funding for the project twice, they barely managed to iron out the last few bugs in the
systems of the 'Mechs before the final deadline for the research passed: the turn of the
32nd century.
As part of the New Year celebrations, a mock combat test using a lance of the upgraded
Maulers against a lance of Sting Jets saw the new technology perform admirably against a
well-matched opponent. Of course, betting was part of the fun and surprisingly, Alisa
Wolfstein herself - the relatively secretive founder of Arctic Silence - joined in the
festivities. Just two weeks later, several Maulers would be fighting in a battle very much
more real than this benign scenario.
Capabilities:
The Mauler MAL-2K is an upgrade of the Mauler MAL-1K and is one of Arctic Silence's first
forays into the world of mixed-technology 'Mechs. They decided to keep the reliable LRM-15
racks, ferro-fibrous armour and internal structure, but stripped everything else. Since this
was designed to be a high DPS ranged combat Battlemech, the Light AC/5s were replaced with
two Clan-Tech Gauss Rifles - each able to fire 16 shots before their ammo supply dries up -
and the Snub-Nose PPCs were swapped out for four Clan-Tech ER Small Lasers for point defense
if enemies close inside of the LRMs' minimum range. To avoid having to redesign the 'Mech
entirely, the Gauss Rifles were placed in the arms instead of the PPCs and the ER Small
Lasers in the torsos instead of the Autocannons. This has the added bonus of making the
MAL-1K and MAL-2K indistinguishable from one another - even being able to fire its LRMs
freely without the enemy being any the wiser.
The Arctic Silence scientists did not like the lack of durability caused by the XL engine of
the MAL-1K, and so removed it in favour of an XL gyro. This also frees up enough space for
the inclusion of CASE II in the torsos - greatly improving 'Mech and Pilot survivability.

higher protection than the MAL-1K despite the weight of the -2K's armour being half a ton
lighter.
Deployment:
The success of the MAL-2K over the next ten years would lead to Arctic Silence purchasing 20
more MAL-1K's to be upgraded to -2K's in 3112, which funnily enough arrived on the same ship
as the 10 "Vulture Mk III E"s (a custom Omnimech configuration designed by Arctic Silence,
which was commissioned from Alshain Weapons for an extraordinarily high cost) did. After
3114 when the Maulers' upgrades had been completed the MAL-2K became a fairly consistent
sight as part of the fire-support lances which the core of most of Arctic Silence's assault
companies.

the inclusion of CASE II in the torsos - greatly improving 'Mech and Pilot survivability. To
allow for these changes, Clan grade ferro-fibrous was used. This means that the MAL-2K has
slightly higher protection than the MAL-1K, despite the weight of the -2K's armour being
half a ton lighter.
After
3114 when the Maulers' upgrades had been completed the MAL-2K became a fairly consistent
sight as part of the fire-support lances which the core of most of Arctic Silence's assault
companies.

================================================================================================
Battlemechs were captured during a warehouse raid inside the borders of the Draconis Combine
in late 3090, the chief engineers were tasked with upgrading the 'Mechs to be able to match
the needs of the missions they would be deployed on.
Unfortunately, they encountered a fundamental issue
with the Maulers that made it extremely difficult to successfully integrate the clan
technology without glitches occurring (making the Clan weapons compatible was
straightforward enough). After over 8 years of constant work and being threatened with
losing their funding for the project twice, they barely managed to iron out the last few
bugs in the systems of the 'Mechs before the final deadline for the research passed: the
turn of the 32nd century.
They decided to keep the reliable LRM-15
racks but stripped everything else. Since this was designed to be a high DPS ranged combat
Battlemech, the Light AC/5s were replaced with two Clan-Tech Gauss Rifles - each able to
fire 16 shots before their ammo supply dries up - and the Snub-Nose PPCs were swapped out
for four Clan-Tech ER Small Lasers (for self-defense if enemies close inside of the LRMs'
minimum range). To avoid having to redesign the 'Mech entirely, the Gauss Rifles were placed
in the arms instead of the PPCs and the ER Small Lasers in the torsos instead of the
Autocannons. This has the added bonus of making the MAL-2K indistinguishable from the MAL-1K
- it is even possible to fire the -2K's LRMs freely without the enemy being any the wiser as
to it's upgraded weapons configuration.
To
allow for these changes, Clan grade ferro-fibrous was used. This means that the MAL-2K has
slightly higher protection than the MAL-1K, despite the weight of the -2K's armour being

Hi Alisa,
Love the fluff, but unless the 'Mechs were still potent 113 years after their debut, I suggest you change the date in the last paragraph from 3112 to 3012.
