Overview:
The Warbird is the signature assault 'Mech of the military organisation known as "Arctic
Silence" (AS). This variant came about due to an interesting development in the groups
relations with the Federated Suns.
With relationships slowly souring between AS and the Lyran Alliance, as each side continued
to introduce countermeasures against each other, AS began to search for a "second home" if
events came to the point of abandoning Págos. The first power to approach was obvious - the
Federated Suns. There were several members within AS who had links with the Fed' Suns
running back to the days of the Federated Commonwealth. Because of this and AS's widespread
fame throughout the successor states, it was easy enough to organise a meeting with several
senior Fed' Suns military officials. After a prolonged multi-day debate on the matter, an
agreement was reached. The Fed' Suns would accept AS's request for an alliance between the
two powers, as long as they jumped through a few hoops. The terms are as follows:
1. Arctic Silence must sign an agreement vowing to never side with the Draconis Combine in
any way.
2. The Federated Suns reserve the right to withdraw from this agreement with immediate
effect if military action is taken by Arctic Silence against the Federated Suns.
3. In return for sending a small number of the 'Mechs they annually produce to the Federated
Suns, Arctic Silence will be permitted to occupy a designated territory of the continent of
Plymouth on the planet of Exeter VII in the Exeter System of the Draconis March.
4. If the intent of Arctic Silence is determined to be genuinely in support of the Federated
Suns after a five year period, this agreement will be re-inforced and made permanent on 22nd
June, 3137.
There was a secret, 5th clause to the agreement. The 5th clause was that the designs of the
Federated Suns new weapon, the "Re-Engineered Laser", would be given to Arctic Silence for
production in their territory on Exeter VII. 10% of the production of these would be sent to
the Fed' Suns for 15 years as payment for the Fed' Suns assistance in aiding the
establishment of this new industry in Arctic Silence's territory.
Wanting to put this new weapon into use as soon as possible, Arctic Silence's chief
engineers rushed to adapt a design they had previously been developing to carry 4 regular
pulse lasers and instead mounted 4 Large Re-Engineered Lasers. The Warbird WRB-4 was born.
Three years after the agreement was signed with the Fed' Suns, the first Warbirds rolled off
the manufacturing lines.
What was unusual about these 'Mechs is that they use a mixture of superior Clan-Tech
equipment and Inner Sphere technology to maximise the effectiveness of the design. All of
Arctic Silence's Clan equipment is purchased from the merchant nation Clan Sea Fox for a
price slightly below what they charge most of their customers.
Capabilities:
The Warbird WRB-4 is designed to be a medium range assault 'Mech capable of delivering
accurate and consistent damage to enemy targets, especially units with close range
configurations or specialist armour types. It uses a Clan-Tech 300-rated XL engine to
achieve a maximum velocity of 54 kph.
To achieve this aim, the WRB-4 mounts 4 Re-Engineered Large Lasers, two in each arm, and two
Clan-Tech LRM-10s with 2 tons of Clan-Tech CASE II protected ammo. To aid the 'Mech in
delivering a constant laser barrage to enemy units, the WRB-4 carries 18 Clan-Tech Double
Heat Sinks. The accuracy of the lasers is heightened by the inclusion of a Clan-Tech
targeting computer, while the 'Mech carries an Angel ECM Suite to protect against enemy
electronics.
To free up enough space to carry this impressive array of firepower, a small cockpit was
installed. For improved protection, the 'Mech has several armoured components - an armoured
life support system and armoured shoulder actuators.
Deployment:
WRB-4s have been seen in small numbers in either contracted deployment by Arctic Silence or
as part of the Federated Suns' army during several minor (but still significant) battles. A
terrifying fact about these 'Mechs is that they ALWAYS deploy in pairs, concentrating their
fire on the same targets to shred through the enemies that have been softened up by faster
skirmisher and recon units prior to the Warbirds' arrival. There have been no salvaged
Warbirds, the few that would have been lost to the enemy destroyed by their Mechwarriors
through overloading the fusion engine. This fact is a source of pride to the Fed' Suns and
AS, and a source of bitterness to the Lyran Alliance.
Variants:
There are (as of 3145) two variants of the Warbird (which are split into multiple
sub-variants):
The WRB-4 and WRB-4L, the WRB-3 & WRB-3X and the WRB-3S.
Notable MechWarriors:
The Warbird has been piloted by Alisa Wolfstein on several notable occasions, and a close
relative of the First Prince uses a WRB-4L as his personal 'Mech of choice.
