Overview:
The Raven has been a prime scout 'Mech for over a half-century, but many have ever thought
that the chassis has never quite lived up to its potential. The 3L model was a definite
improvement over the original prototype models, but it was still relatively slow, and even
the triple strength myomer added to some versions was not effective in alleviating this
issue.
That's where the 5L model comes into play.
Capabilities:
Discarding the relatively unused NARC missile beacon system freed up 5 tons in this new
model, and reducing the heat sink system to the base 10 sinks (but making them all double
strength rating) freed up another ton. Addtionally, the skeletal structure is composed of
endo-steel "bones", and the gyro is an extra-light model. This extra capacity was used to
improve the electronics to the latest Bloodhound active probe and Angel ECM suites; which,
along with the TAG system make this model a prime scout. Finally, its communications system
has been greatly improved with the latest improvements (quirk: Improved communications).
To ensure that the machine could get in and out of combat zones, the engine was increased to
a 280 extra-light model, giving the 'Mech a top speed of over 120 kph. Additionally, the
armor was increased to 6.5 tons of the latest stealth plating.
Offensively, this model Raven is equipped with a pair of extended range 5 cm lasers, and a
multi-missile launcher with 5 tubes. Equipped with 2 tons of ammunition, the latter can
customize its payload depending on its mission with both long and short range missiles of
most any type, and its pilots often load with mine-laying Thunder-type munitions and the
like. To protect the unit against infantry, it has been equipped with an extended range
flamer.
Deployment:
The 5L has just recently started coming off the production lines, so deployment has been
somewhat slow at present. It is expected that all front line units will be equipped with at
least a lance of these 'Mechs within the next few years.
