Okay, so owning a 3D Printers and knowing what it can and can't do, as well as learning those two differences, I am wondering what the impact these will have on the world of miniature gaming in general, both long and short term planning and thinking for different companies. I see the pros and cons of this and at the same time I see it as being able to bring new life to the hobby as well as headache.

Also many of these have scanners in them and thus I could see many extinct and OPP miniatures making a come back and thus leading many to have the moral delimia of do they buy or make these or even use them as well as companies crying over lost revenue since it's easier, well once you figure it out, to make your own then to buy them. But at the same time I could them also selling 3D Print files that allow you to download and print these and thus you have given them something and gotten something in return.

So what are your thoughts on this?

Until the cost of 3D printers that can print at a comparable level to actual miniatures comes down, this really isn't even a discussion. From what I know, to print a miniature the same quality as what you buy would require a printer outside the realm of the average Joe.

Agreed.

The local library has 3D printers that the public can use, and to be brutally honest the stuff coming out of them could in no way be mistaken for legit product; the quality's just too shoddy. The printers seem to even have trouble with some types of Lego-style bricks.

If you want to have a decent quality "do-it-yourself" isn't much of a problem now. But i think it won't take that long before 3D-printers get better and cheaper to make that a viable option.

When that time had come companies will suffer from it. Selling 3D-print files can be an option but an overall loss will be felt by them. In my opinion miniature-making will concentrate on metal miniatures (still favored by some players)and the selling of 3D-print files.

In the long run, I they will be good. However, until the 3D printer quality improves, they just don't cut it.

It also depends on the game/miniatures in question. Are the minis required for the game? It is a WYSIWYG? Do the games have rules against proxies, or unofficial minis?

I imagine games like Warhammer 40K will be impacted the most unless there are specific rules from the company bloacking 3D printed minis. It is expensive to field armies, especially when the rules get overhauled so often that you have to buy a new army every so often. If most of your army is only a few types, then it might be worth the time/money to develop the 3D model and then mass produce your way to victory.
