If so, would they be worth using or would they be more of a stop gap weapon system?

Depends on the faction. Someone desperate for a heavy punch while not being as concerned with the health of individual pilots, or just plain desperate, would go for it. Stereotypically, this would be the Cappelan Confederation, Draconis Combine, and a few Periphery nations (and pirate bands now that even they seem to be able to produce Lostech... sheesh!)

It's not so much that the bandits can produce the new stuff, it's more that they just sorta 'borrow' or 'find' some ships that happen to be carrying equipment

In TR3067 they (TPTB) have Lady Death and her group making a mech with Endo Steel and DHS, not a refitting of an older mahince, a brand new mech from a Factory...

Still, they probably steal the Endo Steel chassis from anyone who produces one of the right weight. Adding the rest of the stuff is easier after that

well, they might....... but they cannot duplicate the heavy laser.
reason simple to get an exact duplicate they'd have to have better ranges on there existing designs. why i say this is simple, clan standard medium laser...... er ml. then by increasing it power out put, and changing the focusing lenses, you get the heavy medium laser. the draw back being a loss in accuracy and range.
so an is medium heavy laser would probly be somerthin like this.....
heat 7; dam 10; range 2/4/6; ton 1; crit 2
and that being nice on the range.......

Known 25-ton mechs whose Endo Steel Chassis would be useful in building the pirate mech:
Commando (5S, 7S)
Duan Gung
Eagle
Mongoose (except the 67)
Nexus
And the Raptor ISOmni has ES too, but it`s not a very likely choice
Why? Well, the chassis is only listed as Contraband, so I`ll assume it`s a stolen and smuggled model. Most likely the Duan Gung or Eagle chassis, as they`re built the closest to the pirates.

Look at the fluff for the Brigand in TR3067...that will explain it completly...
Now back to the topic:
Which House would be the one to really jump on the idea of a heavy laser?
