The Standard Autocannon were improved into the Ultra Autocannon

The Standard Autocannon were lightened into the Light Autocannon, and are probably more likely to be single barrel weapons... most likely similar to the bushmaster.

LB-X autocannon were derived from standard autocannon, indications are that they are more likely to be Larger Barrel and Less shots per burst than Standard and Ultra Autocannon

and the Light Autocannon were improved into the Rotary Autocannon

Ultra Autocannon are more than likely going to be Rotary Multi Barrel Arrangements, While the Standard Autocannon can be either single or multi-barrel... Main difference between the two types is that the Standard has a single rate of fire in the standard game (being able to fire up to 4x as fast under the 2.5 sec / 7.5 m dueling rules) while the ultra can double tap and the RAC is a derivitive of the LAC with the ability to fire 6 times in a turn

The BattleTech Weapons are statted about 6 times as heavy as they would be without all the supporting Equipment

an Autocannon /2 is about 1000 kg, and the rest of it is taken up by auto loaders, targeting and tracking systems (another 10% of the Barrel Weight?), Cooling Systems, etc...

an Autocannon /5 is about 1333 kg

the main difference for BattleTech Cannon is that they are rapid fire...
Where a modern day tank fires 1x 120 mm shells at least one type of AC/5 fires 3 shells and does 5 BT damage with them

And to me this is one of few and yet strongest failures of the BT system. The system is just to hard coded with 2d6, hexes, and full tonnage to allow evolution and devolution of the universe beyond what they have done. How many new weapons can be made before your reinventing the wheel?

my 2 c-bills. (more like 20)

Most games are hard coded. If not you wind up with something out of control and uber items destroy the game. The 2D6 bell curve is the beauty of this game. In a standard linear percentage like Renegade Legion is cool but really changes the game. Trust me, light Mechs would be toast.

But the full tonnage is what got my attention. I allow 1/2 ammo all the time, for any type ammo. Wish they would have made that always legal. Now half ton weapons add ons are and very interesting idea

So for standard AC add ons- here are some ideas
1) Improved Muzzle- makes range like UAC
2) Recoil suppressor- reduced minum range by 1/2
3) Compressed loader- reduce the critical slots by 2

This way each house may have something they worked on. The base technology is not played with, just techs have found ways to make is more effective.

So why was the new range not added to a standard AC- cost is one. Maybe it would have gotten much bigger? Or as with many things at some point people just do not mess with it any more. It meets a function and role as is.

AWAD- my opinion is on $1.95 C bills, see you got a savings.

This is an old argument. Me personally I see the AC2/5 as light rapid fire and AC10/20 as one really big shell. Will not digress but just a feel. Yes there is some fluff and fiction it is rapid fire but a few times they also mention big round in a big gun.

Some say that is what the LB series would be. If it fires a canister, then with normal ammo that would be a single shell. Unless somehow the barrel changes radically between shots.

Just love the idea of a Volkswagen being fired at someone, not a bunch of little softballs. It does not affect the game mechanics in any way, just my imagination.

AWAD- Ahh, the AC20, back in the day head capping had to be done up close and personal.

Since the beginning of that game AC's always fired a single shell per shot in my (and my friends) imagination. As fluff said otherwise we just ignored this part of the fluff and went on with "Booom" instead of "Brrrrp"! Wink

*takes his one-shot fan flag and waits*

Well, somewhere I noticed that the single shot ACs are mainly reserved for vees and 'Mechs usually use the rapid fire weapons, but I also prefer the first to the others.

Interesting, I'd use these. Actually after looking at laser and PPC pics I think that a 'basic' laser can be modified to pulse / ER / heavy variant by installation of an amplifier Very Happy

Well, I think lasers are good enough as is, but these add-ons could be great for retrofitting older AC carrying mechs. Hopefully we'd start seeing more AC's out in the field.

I think the main reason no one has upgraded the standard AC's is that the LB-X _is_ the upgrade. Unlike lasers and PPC's, there is no drawback to this upgrade other than a slightly higher cost.

So, I think it would be silly to spend money upgrading only to end up with, essentially, an LB-X that can't fire cluster shot. Presumably the Ultra's have a longer range simply because they are built with higher tech. If you upgrade a regular autocannon with new techniques you get: an LB-X.

... well, there would still be the matter of special ammo...
