These are the guys you send when the job requires more firepower than a dropship, but still doesn't warrant the attention of even a Frigate or Destroyer. They're effective, easily produced, and CHEAP. I can easily see a squadrons of three or so Lidars patrolling backwater systems, freeing up better ships for more important duties.

Other then my prefrence for splitting up weapons bays, as you already know, my only issue with this vessel is utter lack of cargo space. Drop you fighters to 40 in two bays 30 with 3 doors each and then use the extra space for cargo.

You can also loose one or two grav decks.

Also, you should add a few escape pods for the crew.

And last, you could add 1 or 2 small crafts.

Actually, I would see a squadron of two or three of these as patrolling a small group of systems. It seems far more efficient than keeping KF drive ships in one place, though it does introduce the chance of being caught in the wrong place. Low speed for its size means that its easily killed by a real ship, so as long as you're prepared for the sacrifice, you'll be fine. But the fighters will be quite useful to support ground troops and take the startch out of the enemy as they arrive or depart.

Really though, there's no purpose whatsoever in having a carrier for system defense. It's cheaper and simpler to base those fighters on-planet, or on a moon or asteroid base.

But I agree with Vagabond's comment on cargo. Small craft are nice, but not strictly necessary if you've got a docking collar. But without cargo room for those fighters, they'll be spending a lot of time without fuel ammunition. Too bad that there aren't more pure energy fighters; they'd be good for carrier basing.

Edit:
And you might want to think on the name. The only lidar I know of is a tracking system; a laser based radar, I believe.

Actually the design itself isn't terribly good. I hereby abandon it.

Hey StarRaven the system you are thinking of goes by the name LADAR not Lidar. LADAR works similar to RADAR and uses Lasers over Radio Waves to get the info.

On to the vessel, I like it. It fits with what I think BT should have. Ships out partoling, and acting like fleets and squdrons, not uber weapons. BT is the only sci-fi that I know of that a warship is so badly treated that it is a non enity to the whole ebby and flow of the universe and it's events.

Ships like the Lidar and others are the keep parts of a fleet and wouldn't be forgotten as it seems to be in the BT world. This kind of vessel and others like tender ships and other supply vessels would be there operating along side the main vessels, not forgotten about as it seem TPTB have done.

I like it and will be finding away to fit it into my Co-Alliance and their allies naval forces.

I agree that this type of ship is something that's really lacking. It is a pretty good design, especially for a fleet carrier that will be protected by some larger ships and its fighter complement.

I don't really thing TPTB really forgot these kind of ships, I think they just made that assumption that DropShips and civilian JumpShips would fill in those roles, which is an unreasonable assumption.

LIDAR: laser imaging detection and ranging. The system uses laser pulses in the same way that RADAR uses radio waves and SONAR uses sound waves. The military prefers the term LADAR (LAser Detection And Ranging), when describing the system.

I just thought the word sounded cool, despite knowing what it meant.
